Party dress?
Okay, I know half of you are probably going to say "you sound like my mom!" but c'est la vie...
I'm watching the episode of Insomniac where they go to the fraternity party. I was completely appalled, not so much by the activities (nothing I haven't seen, though NWIH would I want it filmed) but by what the girls in attendance were wearing!!! Low cut sequiny tops, backless stuff, thongs hanging out...they looked like a bunch of hookers. Do people REALLY go to college parties dressed like this nowadays? I mean, we wore jeans and tops, occasionally a denim mini, but if we had on a mini we were damn sure covered on top. I think what made it worse was the guys on the episode were all comfy in letter sweatshirts and jeans. And I still can't get used to college women carrying purses....in my time that was such a big no-no. If you tried to go out with one the sophomores on the floor would literally not let you leave till you left it in your room! |
Yes, you are right, that is how people dress these days, at least around here. It's just really hot here all the time, and not to mention times are changing! When I first got to school 4 yeaars ago, I owned nothing but jeans and t-shirts, but it only took one time of going out to see that I needed to be getting some black booty pants asap. But really, I don't understand the big deal about the purses, why wasn't it cool to be seen with one?

I'm watching that too. That's how so many young women dress in bars and clubs here in New York and in the Hamptons. I noticed it about two years ago. I thought that many of them looked like hookers.
When I was in college, we wore cute outfits, but we never showed our bellies. We didn't show our chests. I think that it is better to leave something to the imagination. |

Yeah that's how people dress for bars and parties here (UArizona). And everyone carries the little purse. Like the little Louis Vitton and the Coach one. I think it's kinda fun to dress a little sexy, but that's just my opinion....I can't imagine not having a purse....you could carry your lipstick and ID in your pocket but what about your cell phone?

Killarney and 33 -- no real internet, but there were Bulletin boards-- the late 80s equivalent of Greek chat. :)
As a single girl in the big city, that's pretty much what you see out and about here too. Unless it super super hot out (or I'm on vacation, no rules apply then ;) lol) my rule of thumb is--if top is backless, then skirt will be longer than mini, or better yet, wear pants. :) if skirt is miniscule, that top sure as hell will cover my midriff, nothing looks tackier to me than a shrunken shirt and shrunken bottom. Backless or low cut doesn't have to look slutty if you accessorize it right. :) And I don't remember purses being a no-no in college--but I never carried one, either. :) Amy |
I guess it depends where you go to school...
...Because if I showed up to a fraternity party looking like I just came from working the street, I'd have eyes rolling... Usually the ones who are way too overdressed are the freshman girls (and their still-in-high school friends) who are showing up to their first college party. I only make exceptions if I'm going out to a club after the party. As far as purses go, I'll usually carry one depending on what I'm wearing. When I go out, I usually have a ishtload of stuff with me--cigarettes, phone, keys, digital camera (yeah-don't ask!) and they'd be too bulky to fit into my pockets even if I'm wearing jeans. When me and the girls hit the bars and clubs we'll usually designate someone to bring in their purse so we all don't have to bring one in. ;) Oh--I can't stand girls that let their thongs show. It drives me nuts. I'll usually have the nerve to go up to them and let them know it too. |
we don't dress like that
I'm the same way as OTW... at my school, we DON'T dress like that to go out. In fact, you don't even see as many black pants as you did two or three years ago. Some people carry little purses, but it's not like everybody does. To party, we usually wear something a little sexier than we'd wear to class, but you'd never see sequins, etc. unless it was a theme (joke) party. I realize we're probably very different from the rest of the college-aged world.

if you can pull it off....
sure a little risk taking can work.
but for those of normal height and weight or if you eddy toward the other side, don't do it. tackiness never wins. just my 2 cents :D |
I see nothing wrong with dressing like that!:D

Anyway, most of my sisters throw on a pair of jeans, a cute shirt, a pair of sandals, grab a case and we're on our way :) |
Yep girls do dress like this. Even the girls that shouldn't wear stuff like that. But the guys have a name for girls that always come to their house or the bar" frat rats or bar sluts." So it doesn't pay to always dress like that and always be around.
We all carry our purses. I can't imagine going out without my purse. |
I don't remember ever dressing like that for a party. I would definitely do something different than I did for class, but we never went that far. I agree with the "if the skirt is mini, the top was more" kind of theory. I sort of understand the purse thing now but not the ones that are so small you can barely fit a phone into it anyway...Maybe I'm just getting old.

At my school it depends what house you're at. Most girls just wear jeans and a cute top to the fraternity parties I hang out at. If you would walk in with a sequined halter and a miniskirt, of course you would get the guys attention, but they would think you were a slut and dressed WAY out of place. I also go to a small rural college  ... guess things are different in the bigger schools
