President/Relevant Info... Help

Hey all,
I am seriously considering running for president of our sorority interest group next elections. (If they're held end of Fall and we're established in the Spring *knock on wood* that means I'll be the first president of our restablished sorority.) So in other words, I don't want to screw up. I've stayed up countless nights (basically every one this summer and last spring) trying to find stuff online to help me or researching stuff about the sorority we're trying to restablish or working on our website. (You get the point.) Anyway, I know a lot about our group as an individual, but I don't know all that much about the greek system as a whole. I'd really like to learn more about the workings/processes/goings-on of greek life, but I can't find much online. I'm not sure what to look up. Does anyone know of any sites that I could go to? I've been to the Robert's Rules of Order site, but the book is like $20 and that's not in my budget right now since I just got a car. Is there anywhere to download it or perhaps *god forbid* get it for free? Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! :)
XOXO,
Steph

Are you close enough to campus to talk to the Greek Life (or whatever it's called on your campus)? That way you would learn what would be expected of your sorority.

Get in touch with whomever would be the sorority's chapter advisor. Is there an area alumnae chapter?

As for a free Roberts Rules of Order, try your library. You could look at it and get a feel for what is expected. Then when you get elected, you could buy one yourself, but shouldn't the Chapter have one so perhaps the Chapter could pay for it?

I think that this website will have just about any situation ever experienced, lol. If not, ask!

Try the posts by brookelineu..she's written about a fictional sorority..

:D
Good luck!!

While I was never the Commaander of the colony (trans: Pres), I was Lieutenant Commander, Marshal and am now Treasurer (trans: VP, Pledge Educator, Treasurer). I did a lot of the work involved with writing our petition and know a few things about being a colony :D

Being president is a huge task. It's great that you've done your research. I don't know exactly what your HQ demands of you in order to grant you a charter but you should find that out and set your goals accordingly.

Robert's Rules of Order was something that was actually VERY secondary. However, I'll toss you a PM here and see if I can't scan it in. I have a cheat sheet around here somewhere that I like to keep out at meetings.

Some links for parliamentary procedure:

This one provides a very brief overview as well as a very readable and printable chart on main motions:

This link provides a more in depth overview and is probably all you really need at this point. Its a good introduction:

ITs also wise of you to start asking questions before saying which sorority you might be affiliating with . . I would hold off for a while. Because each sorority itself will have its own specific program and sometimes its nice to get outside suggestions.

We are more or less already affiliating ourselves with a sorority. I mean we know which one we are reestablishing. One of the girls in our group is an initiated sister from another chapter and nationals is behind us as well. I'm going to ask her to put me in contact with someone from another chapter (possibly hers?) who held the position as president so I can learn more about the position. As for counselors and such on campus, I am home for the summer so my sources are limited, so basically I'm just looking for websites and personal information until I get back to school in August. I know that the presidential position of any group is very time consuming and danting, so I'm trying to start off now. I'm really dedicated to the group and I want the other girls to see that, you know? Plus, I'd really like to know for myself. Basically I don't know all of the different types of meetings, functions, and other routine events that sororities do. I mean obviously, weekly chapter meetings and such, but what else? It's hard starting from scratch, you know? You definately know where I'm coming from ktsnake. Thanks for the help. If anyone thinks of anything else please let me know. :)

Kevin,
I tried to send you a private message but it said that your mailbox is full. It's not really private so I'll just tell you what it said. "That would be great! Don't rush to find it, whenever you get a chance is cool. I appreciate it a lot. I'm sure it will be helpful!" And when you get a chance, clean out your mailbox. ;) :p
XOXO,
Steph
