Questions for all Alpha Xis!

Hi everyone!!

I'm new to this forum. Actually, I've been reading the posts until my account was activated so I've been here a few weeks. Anyway, I'm really interested in becoming an Alpha Xi. I accepted a bid last fall, but i couldn't pledge because of some family "reasons." I know that the chapter at my university is still interested in me becoming a new member.

I'll be a sophomore this year, so I've had a year to research the other sororities. I believe Alpha Xi is for me!! But, I have some other questions that maybe can be answered before I approach my mom again about joining sorority (yeah, she gave me a hard time last fall).

It would be great if as many Alpha Xis could share their sorority experiences with me. I also have some other questions such as mandatory study hours, time and $$ commitment, hazing, etc which I don't know if I should post on here or email or PM someone about.

Okay, I hope to hear from anybody that has some time. Thanks so much!!!!!!

:)

As far as money, really only the individual chapter can tell you that. Dues vary very widely from campus to campus.

For example, dues in my chapter were as follows (obviously anything labeled national won't change from chapter to chapter):
One Time Fees, first semester only
Chapter Fee: $5
Pledging Fee: $55
Initiation Fee: $120
Quill Badge: $28 and up

One Time Fee, second semester only
Corporation Board: $ 50

First semester fees
National Dues: $55
Risk Management Dues: $5
Panhellenic Dues: $5

Semester Fees (starting the semester after you initiate)
Local Dues: $130
National Dues: $55
Risk Management Dues: $5
Panhellenic Dues: $5
Founder's Day Pennies: $1.09

Our chapter didn't have mandatory study hours, and I don't think most do. Usually they institute them for girls who have low grades - too low to hold office or be active. (I believe that's a 2.5.)

There was NO hazing at my chapter or at just about any chapter I know about. In fact, in my chapter, the new members played a prank on us, never vice versa. The new member period consisted of one mandatory meeting a week (held during chapter meeting), but of course the new sisters were encouraged to come to social, philanthropy and Greek events as well as to simply show up and hang out. We wanted them to feel as welcome as possible, so we gave them gifts, took them to lunch, etc.

The time commitment will depend on whether you have an office. All sisters need to go to chapter meetings, some philanthropy and all-Greek events, and rush, initiation and pledging. If you choose to have an office, then naturally it will take time to do those duties. Generally, for a non-officer, sorority membership requires less than four hours a week, except during rush and Greek Week.

Hope this helps!
