The Essence Awards-Thursday night
June 6.2002 on Fox!
:D |
Did anyone see it last night?
I caught the last hour. It was, as always, fairly inspirational (especially the story of Cathy Hughes). I was kinda disappointed in Johnny Gill...it sounds as if he isn't taking care of his gift these days. I loved that Heather Headley (NYers may know her as the lead for Broadway's The Lion King) sang. Of course, my girl Yolanda blew the house down with my favorite recording from her new album, Believe. I was excited to see Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis get their props. Those guys truly do have the utmost integrity in their music and really have lyrics well matched with their artists (ala Mary J.'s "No More Drama" and Janet J.'s "Control", etc.). They are creative genuises who seemed to have been able to strike a powerful balance (personal and professional) that is key to longevity in the business. I did see Roberta Flack and Stevie Wonder's tribute to Alicia. Since I wasn't able to catch the first hour, who were the persons presenting India with her award? Also, I kept seeing Angela Bassett in the audience. Was she an awardee or presenter? |
Essence Music Awards
The awards show was good but, some individuals disappointed me. Why did Janet Jackson look high and so did Alisha Keys. I was sooooo happy they gave india Irie her props. She should have received them long time ago. The all time bama of the show was Angela Bassett girlfriend is always fly what was up with that wig????
Am I the only one that noticed??? |
I saw bits and parts of it. I liked Janet's dress. I love Terri's speech!!(her zero calorie diet!!). I LOVED Steve Harvey and Stevie Wonder, who knew he was that funny.. ha ha.. I give props to Cathy Hughes.
Did anyone watch the MTV Movie Awards, though? |
MTV AWARDS
I did not see the MTV AWARDS
|
I caught part of the Essence awards. I saw the part with Stevie and Steve. That was relly funny. Ole Stevie got some spunk in him.:)
|
I did catch Terry's speech. That was good.
Oh, Stevie and Steve were hilarious. Stevie Wonder has always been quite the comedian when he's not singing....they were funny together though! :D Okay...I went to the Essence.com site, so now I know who I missed. I knew that Kenny Gamble was getting an award yesterday...and was sorry that I missed it. Who did his tribute? |
IMHO...The program has been better in the past. There were parts that I liked but...I don't know...the tributes could have been better.
I liked India.Arie and Stevie's duet and her speech was really good. I'm glad that she has remained humble and grounded... Terry's tribute and speech was good as well...Janet Jackson's dress was so nice, but she looked like she had a hard time walking...I forgot his name, but the honoree who was rebuilding urban area's in Philadelphia...I felt that the artists who represent philly should have sang his tribute (jill scott, musiq, jaguar, etc) instead of johnny gill (glad he got a gig:p ), kelly price (her outfit was busy), and 112 (they tried...but no). I caught the end of th MTV awards...I wasn't expecting Martin Lawrence on the show...that part was funny |
OK...I've got to give my commentary.
Overall, the show was excellent...first class all the way. I expect nothing less of Essence. 1. Cathy Hughes....I give her much praise for her accomplishments. 2. Bow Wow....he's about 2 months away from being as tall as JD. JD needs to be careful hanging around little kids before he gets himself caught up in a little "case" like RKelly. 3. Chante Moore & Kenny Latimore....the Ashford & Simpson of the New Millenium! 4. Yolanda Adams...I love her music and her voice...but I have one thing to say...I was surprised about the dress that she wore. She wore that on her album cover and has worn it on other shows. I don't often see entertainers with her "status" wearing the same outfit on multiple occasions. I still love her music and think she's a beautiful woman...I was just surprised about the dress. 5. Johnny Gill...????? 6. Steve Harvey and Stevie Wonder...that was funny. 7. Alicia Keys...I was pleasantly surprised that she wasn't "big upping" everybody! Her demeanor was much more toned down than usual. |
