Stupid newspaper
 

I just walked into my dining room right now and my mom was reading the paper and was like, "Oh, did you see? 'UF girl wins pageant.' " I was like, "Yeah, did you see what kind of pageant?" And she read further, "Oh, it's a Playmate thing. She's a sorority girl?" The stupid blurb said, "The ads for the behind-the scenes footage on cyber.playboy.com of 'Search for a Playboy centerfold' say the 12 contestants met. They bonded. Then they got wild. Comparing bikini lines, getting wet in the hot tub, grappling and groping like curious, lustful sorority girls." Then it went on about the actual girl, but there was no mention of her actually being in a sorority. Ok, just checked the Greek directory for UF, no mention of her, so she's probably not in a sorority. So was there even a need for that tasteless comment? I do not need the people who pay for my dues reading dumb stuff like that. It's easily misconstrued!

The other week I also had to tear out of Ann Landers an article about Greek drinking. AHHHH!

All you future journalists out there like myself, I have hope for a better tomorrow. Til then, The Miami Herald is a dangerous thing for my parents to be reading...

ps: I know they know about the media's depiction of Greeks, but still...it's not cool for useless comments like that to be associated with their only child while they have breakfast!

I have this image of you sneaking out to paper early in the morning and scouring it for any negative mention of greek life and ripping it out before your folks see it. And then them opening up their paper over breakfast to see articles removed! LOL :D

Seriously, though, you should consider writing a letter to the editor of the Herald, or any paper you see this type of statement in. Be polite and professional!

Explain :

• #1- that student is indeed not in a sorority at UF. And ask them to print an appropriate retraction to that affect.
• #2- the types of events that sorority women participate in (e.g. local and national philanthropies, campus involvment...).. give specifics that residents of the community can SEE and believe
• #3- that it is inappropriate and not very professional to stereotype this organizations. Give some examples of other GLOs aside from your own.

If nothing else it will show a handful of readers that GLO members are concerned with making a difference and are willing to take the time to explain it. Good luck!

As for the article, I realize that it does not say that the young lady in question is a sorority member, but I am certain that if she was, she would be asked to resign from her sorority's membership!

If it's what I'm thinking of, the girl is indeed in a sorority... A Phi Mu won the Playboy competition, and she was in Playboy... in April, I think...

She has since been forced to drop, of course...

I think it's disgusting that a respected newspaper like the Miami Herald would actually print something that sounds like a bad porn magazine. Not only is it bad representation of the Greek community (especially since the girl ISN'T Greek), it's distasteful to print something like that in a widely read paper! Ugh. As a journalism student, I'M tempted to write them a letter, and I'm all the way in Michigan!!!

The Playmate is Lauren Anderson and she is not in a sorority (have friends that know her). As for the Phi Mu chick she wasnt in the regular edition but the special college edition and the Alligator wrote a big article about her and she thought her sorority sisters were not supportive of her and how they made her drop out. They also wrote about how her roomate stocked her afterwards and how she had to live in a hotel and blah blah. Basically I think the point of the article was for people to feel sorry for her. One of my really good friends went the casting call and I went with her (tried to talk her out of it the whole way there, but to no avail she still wanted to do it, but thankfully for her they didnt call her back:D b/c her dad would have died the minute he heard) and I saw a bunch of girls getting out of cars with sorority letters on them ( KD, Tri-Delt, Phi Mu, ADPi, AOPi, and ZTA) and lining up for the interview process, but it is possible that some might have been going to Denny's instead but I doubt it. One chick even had her letters on!!!:eek: I was kind of amazed that there were that many sorority women there because I asked my friend (who was also in a sorority at the time!!!) what would happen if they and her actually were published and she said probably nothing, I guess she was wrong because Tracey Lee Whitton sure got kicked out. But to each their own, I suppose!!!
