School Daze on DVD

Has anyone listened to Spike's comments on the School Daze DVD. To be honest it pissed me off the negativity he spoke of Greeks.

I have not seen School Daze on DVD.

Correct me if I am wrong. Spike Lee was rejected for fraternity membership. Could this be the reason why he has a negative feeling about fraternities?

I heard that too but I'm not sure if it's fact. Rent it or borrow it. It's a must see.

For the record, according to his commentary, his negative feelings are due to the fact that a lot of prospective members are willing to go through a lot of humiliation and physical abuse in order to belong to an organization and that a lot of fraternity brothers often use their letters in order to get women.

He also says in no uncertain terms that Gamma Phi Gamma is a culmination of the negative aspects of such Greeks as Alpha, Kappa, and Omega (no mention of Sigma or Iota).

While he does not outright state that he pledged Omega, he very subtly dropped hints that at least imply that he did.

His commentary IMHO was ok. Not quite what I looked forward to, but I liked it.

Re: School Daze on DVD

WHOA! Freaky, I JUST saw the DVD this weekend and listened to what Spike had to say.

First of all, I really wish that he has actually watched the movie once before recording his comments. Ole boy really sounded unprepared. I mean, just laughing at random places.

Second, I was ticked off as well. I think that overall, School Daze is an excellent satire and it does portray, in a humorous yet serious way, the degredation of the morals of students in college, epsecially those who pledge.

HOWEVER. . .hearing Spike's comments just left a sour taste in my mouth. I love School Daze and recognize it as satire, not gospel. . .heck, I have it on VHS and DVD, I have the soundtrack, the book "Uplift the Race", and some stills from the original press kit. None of that really conveys what Spike seems to REALLY feel about BGLOs in his own words.

I think it would be different if he was a member of an organization and could say "I made this movie as a message to BGLO members to change their ways." But in his comments, he comes off as an outsider, saying "I know this is how you are because I've seen it, and now I'ma put your business out there."

I mean, certainly, I have seen a lot of the negativity that Spike is talking about. . .in the book "Uplift the Race", he reveals that the original script called for the new Gammas to run a train on "Jane" once Half-Pint is done. I mean, I know people who have been on both sides of situations like that, and hazing, and shenanigans, etc, etc. . .but I think Spike is being irresponsible by saying in his comments, essentially, "This is the way it is." It is NOT universally the way it is.

PLUS, one more problem I had was that he mentioned the infamous death of the Alpha Pledge at Morehouse. The way he stated it in the commentary, he made it sound like he made the film after the hazing death ocurred. . .

Anyway, I apologize for my rant. . .but I had nobody to talk about it with other than my Bro who saw it with me.

peace
