I'm not a member of a BGLO, but I thought I would reply anyways. If I ever had kids (not one of my current aspirations http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif )that went on to college and wanted to join an auxillary group I would definately discourage them; here's why: I think when these groups first came about they might have been fullfilling a need. But there are numerous organizations out there (GLO's, BGLO's, and others) today that I would rather see them involved in. If they are interested in Greek life, then they should really go greek, not just get involved with a sweetheart or little sister or other auxillary group. I think that the general consensus on these groups (and my limited understanding of them) is that they are frowned upon and provide little for the members, where a BGLO or GLO can offer them innumerable and irreplaceable experiences. I would encourage them to check out the fraternities or sororities available at their chosen campus. I guess if they were dead set on joining on one, I couldn't prevent them from doing so, but I wouldn't be rushing out to finance it for them, either. (I mean disresepct to no one, this is just MHO). ------------------ SilverTurtle@greekchat.com Phi Beta Fraternity Phi chapter |
Silver T: touched an interesting point. thanks for your views. TOanswer the question. I wouldn't want to tell them what to do. If they ask me, I would suggest to just go for the three letters for the reasons Silver T stated.

when my yet unborn children reaches 18 years old, i will not be "letting" him/her do anything....it's a little hard to forge a path to adulthood with parents controling your every move. i would be remiss as a parent who is greek to not let my child know a little about greek life. i'd let her/him know that these organizations are NOT sanctioned by the NPHC orgs (except for Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., they allow sweethearts) and also that, depending on the campus, s/he may hurt her/his chances for becoming greek later on. i, as others, would engourage her/him to look into the organizations in preparation for her/his decision of whether or not to plegde and what. the final decision is not mine to make, that's up to my child, but as someone said, i am not going to provide the funding to pledge for one letter that's being borrowed from someone else.

If my son and or daughter wanted to join an auxilary, I wouldn't discourage them. But, I would talk to them about their reasons for joining the auxilary to make sure they are not being naiive.
