Sarongs/Pareos
 

I will be leaving my current job location in a couple of weeks, and as a gift one of my friends/coworkers gave me a sarong. It's really cool, kind of a dark reddish/pink with big lizards on it! The friend is from Thailand, and I think it's really neat to have something that relates to his culture (I always ask him tons of questions).

Anyway, I did some research online to learn about their history a bit more and different ways to wear them. Unfortunately, here in Ohio there aren't a lot of beaches or warm weather to wear it in. I know some of you live in/are from warmer climates & wondered if you ever wear them? Do you wear them strictly as beachwear, or do you wear them out other places, too? Do you have suggestions on what to wear with them that is comfortable but looks okay?

Hrm... When you say "sarong", do you mean a big swath of fabric that's tied around the waist? 'Cause that's what I have. If you mean something that's more Indian in style, like wrapped around your whole body, I can't help ya there. :)

I live in Southern California and I wear it occasionally during the summer. I would wear it to the beach with my swimsuit underneath. Sometimes I'll wear it around town just to run errands. Though, you have to make sure that it's tied properly!!!

I usually wear mine with a fitted tank top with thin straps and flip flops.

Yep- it's a big piece of died cloth. Probably about 3'x5-6' in size. It's not the more Indian style (although I think I know what you're talking about, I don't know the official name).

The Indian style is a sari. Linen or cotton top and skirt, then a long swath of material that you wrap around your waist (covering the skirt) and toss over your left shoulder. They can be very beautiful.

Can't help you with the sarong though - the Northeast doesn't exactly have balmy weather most of the year :)

I've had the same pareu for the past I don't know how many years already and I love it!

Most of the time I'll use it as a wrap around my waist especially when I'm at the beach and I'm feeling self conscious walking around in a two piece.

It also comes in handy after taking a shower while camping. The simplest full body wrap method I know of is holding and extending it as if you were to wrap yourself in a towel. You can adjust it to the appropriate length by folding it in a bit. Bring the sides to the front and twist the top two corners (not too tight!), eventually cris-crossing by the neck. End by tying the corners in a knot behind the neck.

There are a lot more ways to do this, but I really suck at giving directions. I apologize in advance if the above directions don't work!!! :eek:
