Jaycees?
 

Is anyone here involved in the Jaycees? I've been invited to become a member and I'd like to know what it's all about.

Are you a female? If so, I find it fascinating that you were invited to become a member. What part of the country are you from?

The reason why I ask is because I have just taken a law midterm in which I was tested on the Roberts case which put on trial the very organization that you are considering. If you are a woman you can thank Supreme Court Jusice Brennan for holding that public accomidation rights take precedent over association laws. Since not too long ago, women were not allowed into this male fraternity of sorts. When the first woman was admitted into a local chapter, nationals was furious. Sorry about this tangent, but interesting nonetheless.

Wow! I didn't know that! (Yes, I am a girl) The chapter that's invited me is about half men, half women. I'd gotten the impression that it was always a co-ed thing.

So, do you know what it is really? It looks like it's pretty much just a community service organization?

Where in Milwaukee? I dwell in the same city, on the eastside (uwm campus).

I live on the lower east side...on Cass between Wells and Kilbourn.

I'll be going to UW-M in the fall! :D I was at UW-Whitewater but took a year off and ended up moving to Milwaukee. How big is Greek life at UWM? I haven't seen many people wearing letters or anything, but I'm not up there often yet, either....

I'm a Jaycee...joined the Bolingbrook, IL Jaycees in 1995. I actually found it a quite natural next step from my experiences in APO.

Any other Jaycees here?

I'm not a Jaycee, but it DOES seem like the next logical step after APO, doesn't it?! I always felt that APO should pattern it's alumni associations after the Jaycees.

Also, the Downtown Jaycees (DC Metro Area Chapter) used to sponsor the DC HOBY Seminar, and they are still the driving force behind the Cherry Blossom Parade.

I know in the "Life after APO" booklet that alumni get, Jaycees is one of the recommended organizations to join, and I've met a lot of APO brothers through the Jaycees. The Indiana Jaycee state president in 2001 was an APO brother, and so was the state management VP that year.

I did, for about 6 months, but I relinquished my membership. I just didn't get along very well with several members of the chapter. This chapter was extremely religious, and while I'm quite religious myself, they were constantly trying to get me to come to their church (pretty much everyone was from the same church), and I wasn't interested. I eventually just stopped going to meetings.


However, while I was involved I did get a feel for the organization and think it's a great thing :) That particular chapter just wasn't for me!

I'm only about six months away from losing my eligibility to join the Jaycees; if I remember correctly, the Jaycees don't take anyone over 40.

But I'm just as happy being an active member of the local Masonic lodge; this June 21, I get installed as Associate Patron of the local Order of the Eastern Star chapter. If my year goes well and I don't screw it up, I may be elected to Worthy Patron next year.

Which chapter was it, if I may ask? (You can PM me if you want) I have a friend near Milwaukee who is looking to join a chapter...I am just curious if that's the chapter he's been checking out.

Because, you know, it's bad to be involved with a fat and ugly chapter that doesn't wear enough Burberry and Lacoste. :D

AlphaSigOU...actually the national organization just changed age range to 18-40 from 21-39. It is true that nationals does not recognize members over 40, but several chapters (including mine) do have very active associate members (associates-over 40 with some under 21...well, now to be 18). In my chapter associates can't vote and they can't be elected to the board of directors (they can be appointed after the election, however) but they can run projects and come to activities and stuff.
