Laid off!

I was laid off today from my job of 2 years.

My company has had layoffs every quarter for about a year and a half - ever since the tech sector started going south. My office has gotten off light the past few rounds, but today the ax fell. Me, my boss, and 8 others.

I will get a small severance package, and I'm eligible for unemployment (which is *tiny* compared to my salary, but it's something).

What really sucks is my boss getting laid off. He was one of the best people they had. His wife is a SAHM and they have 3 little kids. :( All I have is a mortgage...

Meantime, wish me luck - I'm hitting the streets, resume in hand.

I know there are a lot of people here from the NYC area... if you know of any companies in Fairfield or Westchester counties that are hiring software engineers, please let me know. (I'll use all the connections I can get ;) )

Good luck! I am sure you will find a new and better job soon enough.

I'm so sorry to hear about this, but zntke is right. This is a great opportunity for you to find something fantastic.

I bet you'll be gainfully employed again before you know it. :)

I was laid off in 11/01...took three months to get a job - actually, two. It was a great situation though...I get to work from home full time, and teach part time at the local community college - so I really enjoy not having to go to the office, commuting, spending $$$ on lunches all the damn time, staying at home with the wife - best thing that ever happened to me!

I am sorry to hear about your lay off.

The best of luck to you while in search of a new job. :)

I'm so sorry for you. I might might be head down the same road. My company is being retraded and looking for any reason to get rid of people. I think they are trying to get us to quit so that they won't have to pay us serverence.

Well, you say you worked there for two years. I'm not sure what you did/do but that is experience time under your belt. Just go out there and apply and inquire like crazy, you'll have a new job and be back on your feet (if you even fell down in the first place) in no time.

I got laid off as well when the telecom's fell last year. That was back in june '01, and the best thing that could have happened to me. I took it as an opportunity rather than a setback. I've looked on a lot of online job sites, and software engineering jobs seem to always be there, so I wouldn't worry too much, especially since you have experience. Get on all the free resume sites you can (monster, hotjobs, headhunter..) becuase it really does make a difference.
