BET: Let's Be About Action

Instead of complaining and griping and name calling, what can we do for the future?

If this happens next year, be it BET or MTV or NBC, how would you propose that it (presentation of Divine Nine) be handled?

What would you like for YOUR organization to do? What would you want the general public to know and see about your organization?

As a soror always said, Don't Talk about it. Be ABOUT it!"

CrimsonTide4 05-08-2002 06:15 PM

I guess the rest of y'all are still thinking about what you would have TV show about your orgs.

Anway, here is what I want DST to do:

*Interview our National President about DST -- its mission, thrusts, founding principles

* SPotlight chapters, both grad and undergrad, who have programs that center around our 5 thrusts.

*Spotlight chapters who do programs that may not specifially center around a thrust but yet IMPACT the community, especially our youth.

*Talk to INFLUENTIAL members of Delta, not necessarily famous ones but ones whose work IMPACTS the community, i.e. Rae Lewis Thornton and her talks around the country educating about AIDS and HIV or Soror Dorothy I. Height whose work for Delta, National Council of Negro Women and the Black Family reunion have been monumental.

*Interview various Deltas around the world and ask them how has DELTA shaped them and our world.

*Show Deltas in action -- service and sisterhood and scholarship
-- Habitat for Humanity projects, either in progress or completed
--Betty Shabazz Delta Academy

*Showcase our National Headquarters and our birthplace, the campus of Howard University

*Show Delta's contributions to literature, arts, medicine, science, law, government, etc.

That's really all that I can think of but I figure I want to be about it and not talk about it so if you see this happen one day -- then you know that I meant it.:D

I agree with everything you said just put Alpha in the place of Delta :) :D But I also think that we just need a special on BET about HBGLO in the NPHC and the past present and Future of our orgs. Talk about all the wonderful things and then talk about our problems as well.........somewhat like a nightline 20/20 special.

Okay Sphinx, take your sugestion and let that be the opener meaning that this would be a 10 day program, the NPHC mini-series.:D

Day one would be a focus on the NPHC as a whole, our origins, present, future; hazing (if you want); the Divine Nine book and author, the NPHC president as well as all organization's presidents have a round table or open mic that introduces each organization. Also show different orgs working together.

Then each night in FOUNDING order would be that organization's night to present its org and whatever it wanted the public to know about it.

Hey CrimsonTide4,
I'm not in a BGLO, but I would LOVE to see BET have a special like this. First of all, it will give the public a view of the hard work each org. does, and secondly, it will show the public that greek orgs. are not all about stepping, strolling, wearing para., etc...

Great idea!! :)

Naw...folks just too busy fussing about who coulda-shoulda-woulda won and who's "hatin" (Yeah I said it!) :p

What funny to me is that folks will complain all day and night about GDI perceptions about what is important and them spend a lot of time chatting about things *they* say are not important. The Bible says where a man's treasure is his heart is as well (paraphrase), well, if posting is a "treasure", I think we can see where folks "hearts" are!

No "hater-ation" (I love that word! LOL) just observation! Hey! That rhymes! :D

I would like to see a profile of each individual org, interviews with executives and prominent (those who have done great service) members, and programs impacting the community in general and youth and those in need in particular. I'd also like to see an undergraduate focus highlighting members discussing what made them choose ABC org, or any HBGO.

I would also like to see a panel of movers and shakers of each org (as well as those on the other side of the issue) with the theme "Have the NPHC organizations outlived their usefulness?" and a mixed audience (Greek and non-Greek) posing questions concerning the issues facing HBGOs in a moderated format. (Issues like hazing, promotion of divisiveness in the black community, etc.)I think the dialogue would benefit all participating organizations and the public. Then at the end of the segment/segments, a step competition could be done.

I think that each org should at least get three to five minutes to identify themselves/special things about their org and five minutes to step. There should be one show with sororities and one with fraternities, with one vote for the overall winner. The prize should be a SIZABLE check in the name of the winning organization to a previously agreed upon charity.

That's all

Soror, those are all wonderful ideas, you should forward them to National Headquarters (S&S, I think?) and the NPHC. We DEFINITELY need to get BET to highlight the positive things we do, instead of just "stepping"

There are legions of young people who base their decision to join an org based on how good the step team is. Then they get in, and don't want to do any work!

Happydaysf91 05-12-2002 07:25 PM

When they get in....

Virtual Violet --

They get in and 'don't realize' they have to work and then fall by the way side (aka -- inactive financially and physically).

Personally, I feel as though a lot of this is started on the High School level. They mimic us by stepping/sterotypes and think that's all to it! I even had a girl tell me that their group was our little sisters and that they win every step show!

Just crazy....
