Article in magazine
This really pertains to ALL greeks but since i'm a Theta i decided i'd post this in here. I was reading Allure and i guess there was a previous article about Body Image and Greeks. This was a response to the article by a reader..
" I thought Professor Bonifazi's comment at the end of an article about negative Body image ["Mood News," March] was completely biased. She said that "women who are more focused on appearance and popularity are probably more inclined to join sororities." If the good professor would like to take a stroll down Greek Row, I think she would find young women (and men) who are more focused on getting good grades and volunteering than on their popularity and physical appearance ." Beth Hawley Orlando I think her comment was so true because people just put stereotypes to Greek organizations and they aren't even greek themselves, so they don't know what goes on. Everyone cares about their looks, most people want to look presentable, just not members of the Greek Organizations. Yeah to some it is about being popular and stuff, but to most sororities are more than looks. But that's just my opinion. :) |
Ladies I hope you don't mind me putting the two cents in if you do PM me and I will delete it. Here I go...
On my campus the issue of body image, fitting a mold, and eating disorders has really become more and more an issue so a group of organizations got together to fund a "Everyone is Beautiful Week" There are speakers about body image and how college men and women deal with the issue. There are workshops to facilitate discussions on eating disorders. There is a philantropy project with it "Don't change those genes take these jeans" people donate old jeans to show first that you can't change how you are born but secondly they will be donated to organizations that can pass them out to those that need them. There is Student Health that will be putting on an event during the week. It seems that this issue is prevalent elsewhere so this may be an idea to get started on your perspective campus...;) Thanks for you time ladies... |
UCF Theta- that was a great article! I agree totally.
fjijr- those are some really good ideas on ways to help people have a better body image. Interesting post. |
That was an excellent reply to the magazine article! One of the reasons I chose my Theta chapter over the other seven chapters at my school was because everyone is different, not just in interests, but our body types as well. I knew and still feel that I dont have to wear certain types of clothes, or be a certain weight to feel like I belong or fit in my chapter. I struggled with weight and body image issues hardcore in high school, and I wouldnt have joined my chapter period if I thought for one minute I'd be judged on my appearance.
