Locals joining forces?
I was just tossing the idea around in my head right now and please don't crucify me but what about locals joining foorces and forming loose-knit national organizations... like a weak central admin and a powerful chapter admin? Or having regional glo's, not just local
as for locals that want to affiliate with nationals.. why not see if there is a near by local or see if you can make a new natioanl organization.. does anyone think these ideas are possible/feasible? |
I think both ideas are doable. I think having a central core works well with any organzaition. It would give support when needed for Locals and other organizations on Campus that don't always have the same rights and responsiblities as other National Organizations.

I think that this is a good idea as well, and am surprised that this wasn't brought up or thought about before. I think that a lot of locals can benefit from some sort of a national organization. This sounds kind of oxymoron-ish, but maybe like National Local Sorority Council, like the National Panhellenic Council. It can maybe help girls who want to organize a local sorority on their campuses, and have a central information network with conventions and such. There doesn't need to be national rules regarding recruitment or anything, but some sort of national connection would be nice. If anyone is willing to help start something like this, or just to toss around ideas, I'd want to be involved. :)

i support having some sort of network between locals but i still think that each individual local should have their own identity. but it would be awesome to band together and help other locals at different schools with risk management and whatnot.

I still think that this is an awesome idea. Localsororities - are you interested in helping to start this, considering you have such a comprehensive list of locals? If you or anyone else is interested, PM me, and we'll talk. :) I'm not that familiar with how NPC got started, but if anyone knows, we should check it out. If we can get some girls on GC who want to start working on it, we should probably talk with our chapters about this, considering this might be controversial to some.

I think this idea is wonderful! My Sisters and I were discussing this same topic a few months back when we realized that a link had been added on the Local Sororities website about the Second Annual Midwest Local Sorority Convention. I remember thinking "when was the First?" We discussed how amazing it would be to able to work with other Locals to form some sort of national organization of Local organizations (maybe not only open to sororities...as we would be able to benefit greatly from the males perspective, as well). I don't know...it's just an idea. I know that my organization would definitely be open to participating and throwing in a bit of our own "elbow grease," as well. Please PM me if anything is discussed to give this some more serious thought.
Way to go, chscrew144! I think you've just began something amazing for Local orgs. everywhere!!! :D |
If you go to localsororities site, there's a page on Councils and Organizations. I think the general idea is great, but I think I would prefer the idea of a federation of local sororities--take it back to the idea of the difference between the Constitution and the Articles Confederation. I have some reservation with using the overstructure even remotely as a top down structure. For instance, I would never want any overstructure dictating academic rules for my local. Requiring a certain GPA and study hours and such sounds like a nice idea--standards are important, but every girl in my sorority has a full tuition scholarship, and would get kicked out of school if her GPA dropped below a 2.0 (average graduating GPA 2.7). It doesn't sound great, but getting C's and D's and for some, even an F is common at my school. We already spend Friday nights and Saturday nights studying--my place of greatest frequency on any given Sunday night is in the lab--study hours would only mess up our own rigourous study schedules and raising the GPA requirement would put many of our girls on probation at some point or another. Basically--grades at my school don't reflect knowledge and effort relative to the real world. Standards at one school might numerically differ, but functionally be equivalent. I realize the example I quoted is extreme and maybe even irrelevant but I'm sure there are other locals with less drastic examples but just as strong sentiments and concerns for maintaining sovereignty. While we wouldn't want anyone telling us how manage ourselves---especially academically, we would love having the opportunity to share ideas on how to go about doing something organizationally. Semantics and reservations aside, I think in addition to what it could do with support for locals currently in school is perhaps set up a structure for alumni--I love being a local and with my letters, but I have to admit, as a senior, graduating in a few short months--I'm a little envious that you can travel al over the place and find a DZ alumni chapter, for example, and they still get to do stuff together with sisters from all over the place. I'm really interested in hearing more on what everyone is thinking about an over structure, so I'll keep posted.

Locals Unite
I think the uniting of local sororities is a great idea. I am a sister of Gamma Chi local at SJU NYC. I sometimes feel like people don't think us locals count as much as nationals. We should be able to have our own alliance. We have a couple of locals at my school but we all try to act so independent even though we all stand for basically the same things. The only hitch in this would be getting all the locals to unite. Perhaps it would be simpler to unite the locals by regions. I don;t know. Anyone else who thinks its a good idea should come foward maybe we could start something BIG! :D
