King of the Hill

I'm watching Futurama right now, and I just saw an ad for the upcoming King of the Hill ... Luann joins a sorority. It involves panty raids. Hm.

i thought it was an interesting episode. the sorority was a cult that sold jam and jelly, and peggy joined it too.

For those of you who didn't see the episode, Peggy tells Luann that she needs to make friends. So, Luann decides to go to sorority rush. Of course, Luann thinks sororities are all about beer drinking, parties and panty raids. As is such, she makes a bit of a scene during the house tour at "Zeta Sigma Tau." The Zeta Sigma Taus and other PNMs look at her funny and some even laugh. Luann leaves, embarassed and dejected.

Outside on the sidewalk, she meets up with a girl from "Omega House" who invites her to go Omega. It turns out that Omega House is actually a cult that brainwashes the girls and forces them to sell jam and jelly. Luann escapes and goes to Peggy for advice. Clueless Peggy, not wanting Luann to miss out on sorority life, decides to drive Luann back to the sorority house where Peggy gets sucked up into the jam cult as well.

Peggy's husband Hank catches wind of what's going on and he and his friends go and rescue Peggy and Luann from the Omega House.

It was sort of an interesting storyline, albeit unrealistic. :)

What I thought was interesting was the show's portrayal of the Zeta Sigma Taus. They were portrayed as well-dressed and popular. They did come off a little snobby. I got the impression that they were more apalled at Luann's boorish behavior than anything else. After all, Luann showed up for recruitment carrying a six pack of beer. :) This one sorority member looked horrified when Luann asked something like, "I heard some fraternity members sayin' that Zeta Sigma Taus were whores. Is that true? 'Cause I don't want to join if that's true." (hee hee....I totally thought of our "Weird rush stories" thread!!)

Someone on the writing staff did their homework. One of the PNMs gave a "secret" handshake to one the the ZST members who exclaimed excitedly, "You're a legacy?!"

At any rate, I actually thought that the show was pretty fair to the portrayal of greek life. Instead of showing bad greek stereotypes, the cartoon showed that Luann was the one who had the wrong idea of what sororities are about. That they aren't total party drink fests or something.

Not too bad.

I liked the episode too- especially the part where Peggy Hill talks about the life long friends that come out of a sorority.

You think that maybe TV is coming around in the portrayal of Greek life? I haven't watched it at all, but I heard that Dawson's Creek and their portrayal of "SigmaEp" isn't so bad. Then again, is it okay to accept something that "isn't so bad"? I guess I've been conditioned to expect the worst.

I'm not sure if we can use "King of the Hill" as a yardstick for how Greek life is portrayed. After all, it takes place in Texas and GLOs are huge there. It wouldn't be at all realistic for them to show a Texan speaking ill of Greek life.

FuzzieAlum 04-22-2002 04:52 PM

Well, there WAS the part where Peggy said that all GLOs haze! (Of course, she wasn't a member, either, so how would she know?) But otherwise, it wasn't too bad - the girls were a little snotty, and I'd like to think that even devoted moms wouldn't teach their non-initiated daughter the secret handshake. I guess those are quibbling points, though.

Of course it was the Omega house that came off badly, and it was not a sorority at all but a cult that fronted as a sorority.

Hey all, ah fuzziealum ya beat me to it, I was gonna make a post about King of the Hill, lol. Anyways, it was a fairly decent show tonite, Peggy Did mention the little thing about all GLO's haze, cause it makes the bond stronger , or something along those lines, I believe is what she said.
But other then that it wasnt too bad, a little odd for King of the HIll though, but it's an odd show so it's all good :p
