greeks look down upon...
What do greeks generally look down upon? I was just wondering. I am a high school senior and i'm just wondering in general, what greeks consider acceptable or not acceptable. I am a pretty outgoing person and i have done some crazy in my time (17 years...long time huh? jk) I was just wondering that if i joined a sorority, if my craziness will be frowned upon...

Greeks celebrate individuality and diversity but certainly no one wants to be embarrassed by the actions of a sister or brother.

i don't think anything i've ever done would constitute as embarrassing..at least i hope not... I just am not as reserved maybe as i picture sorority girls to be. I know that sounds stereotypical, but i don't mean it to be...i've never been around greeks so i don't know how they act...reserved, rambunctious, outgoing, etc... thanx for the input

Well, some are reserved, some are rambunctious, some are outgoing--you name it!
|
ok, good thanks for your help carnation! I think i was generalizing everything...

If you do happen to run across a chapter with women who have sticks up their butt, you probably know what to do...turn around and run the other way. You should never feel like you have to put your personality on a leash to fit in anywhere.

Hi, my name is Tanya and I'm a crazy! (totally joking)
Greeks are the same as any other college student, except for they seek brotherhood/sisterhood/community.
If anything, being too reserved can be frowned upon more than being too outgoing. |
a few examples
I'll list some things that could get a sorority member in trouble with the group, or maybe even kicked out... 1. really bad grades (and not pulling them up after being warned)... 2. extremely slutty or embarassing behavior that a lot of people on campus know about (gives the whole group a bad rep by association)... 3. any sort of arrests or trouble with the law (once you get to school). By the way, unless you go to college with a ton of girls from your high school, stuff from HS usually doesn't follow you to college. So if you did something sketchy in HS, it probably won't matter for rush unless lots of girls in sororities at your college are from your hometown.

wow, thanx for everything...it's helping me get a better view of greek life...you guys are awesome!

i'm the new member coordinator for my chapter and i like to tell my new members both in respect to our chapter as well as the other chapters on campus that for every stereotype you hear about a chapter (or greek life in general in your case) there are at least 15 women in that organization that can break your stereotype. so i guess in this case, there are literally thousands upon thousands of women out there that go against every stereotype you've ever heard of in reference to sororities. it depends on where you're going to school and the size of their greek life on campus but there is generally a chapter out there that will fit your personality if you are open to greek life and are yourself during recruitment. i'm sure if you look through the threads on here you'll see that theme repeated over and over on gc. good luck !

I agree with 33girl. If they have that thick stick thats wedged up their butts, RUN as fast as you can! But like everyone has said it depends on the girls (indiviually), the chapter as a whole and the campus environment. My campus was (and still is) pretty crazy so nothing really shocks. For example, and these are just examples... what you may have done might shock and have AEPhi saying "we dont think so" about you, my chapter of AGD raising a toast to you and saying "Rock On" or "Sweet", or Tri-Delt going "That's It? Let me show you what crazy really is". Everyone has done crazy stuff in life and if they can't accept you for who you are and what you can contribute as a person....you dont need them anyways. An exception is if you have committed murder and stuff like that :)

Another thing I haven't seen mentioned is drug or alcohol use/abuse. I know that AGD has a ZERO tolerance for drugs and we as a chapter have our own rules for drinking alcohol i.e. no drinking in letters, no drinking out of cups with letters, no going into bars with letters, etc. Those things associate something you do as an individual with an organization that is larger than that. As for the drug thing, it may not be a problem a lot of places, but in KY where I live, it is the number one cash crop, so a lot of kids do it... get busted doing it and you are out.
Other than that I cannot think of a lot of things people "Look down on" other than those things you know are not right. Sleeping around and making a name for yourself don't look good, either. I amnot saying you have to be a virgin, just keep your private life private. Sarah |
What school do you plan to attend Tara?

What Do Greeks Frown Upon?
I think what you did in the past is what you did in the past, and no one should hold that against you. The sisterhood does want diversity and idividuality. But remeber your actions will reflect upon the other girls as well.
