Wearing white after Labor Day...

I saw this posted in another forum.

I grew up in San Francisco where "do your own thing" is standard [general feeling on the west coast]. Although I don't wear white that much anyway, not until I visited the south did I meet people who stick to the rule of not wearing white after labor day and before easter.

What do you think of this? Why do you think, we as Americans, think "rules" like this are important?

Personally, I think it's silly. The only thing I agree with is wearing weather appropriate clothing, ie: shorts in the summer and not winter or open-toe shoes in the rain..

Thoughts?

There are exceptions...

I'm a Southern girl, so I was raised to never wear white shoes after Labor Day, but white clothing was okay. With the popularity of winter white, the rules have relaxed somewhat, but if you must wear white shoes after Labor Day, make sure they're not sandals or Spring/Summer footwear.

Southern Belle

I too am a Southern Belle and was taught not to wear white shoes,(pumps, boots, sandals) after Labor Day. Tennis shoes are an exception. I was also taught not to wear white bottoms(shorts, pants, skirts) as well. The classic white shirt is no problem. I think it is silly too. As I got older, I didn't see the point! However, it is stuck in my head and I can't get out of post labor dayitis:p

Yes, I was raised the same way and can't get it out of my head. I have worn white pants/shorts after labor day but I will NEVER wear white shoes after labor day.

I am from Chicago and everyone pretty much does their own thang...I really dont see people wearing white unless its a pair of gym shoes (some ppl call them tennis shoes) or a t-shirt. We all know to wear the white outfits in the summertime.

By the way...where did this "rule" come from? Just a thought. -Yemaya-

I don't know why I can't stay on top of this :(

Sorhors and Sisterfriends,

I also was raised to put away the white after labor day! I really don't like wearing white shoes because they get dirty easily and they make my size "7" feet look really large! I always thought that wearing white and pastels were colors for spring!

I dunno where this "tradition" comes from either, but....

The only white "shoes" that I'd wear after Labor Day and before Easter are some white sneakers. That's all.....

Good question!

I think I may be one of the few native Californians that sticks to this rule. My grandma was from "Luziana", and very much the lady. I take after her. There are just some things I won't do. No white pants, or shoes [except gym/tennis shoes] in the winter. Sometimes people are just too darn informal for my liking.

I hear that...

I was raised in Louisiana, and the ladies I grew up around don't even play that white after Labor Day and before Easter business... :)

Of course I mentioned this to my Canadian mother in law and she looked at me like I had 2 heads!

I'm another native Californian who is sort of strict about stark white after Labor Day. I prefer wearing ivory between Labor Day and the first day of spring. I'm wearing ivory pants today.
