Jobs **sigh**

Sorry guys, but I just want to express my discontent over the job market.
I graduated last May and i still haven't been able to find a job. Everyone wants three years of experience or one skill that I don't have that makes up a large part of the job. Grrrrr.....what to do. I have been temping but I can only make so many address labels in my lifetime and I have by far exceeded that quota......

That's all just needed to vent

Aww, it will be okay. Just keep looking and the right job will come along. Do not become discouraged. It will be okay. :)

I know how you feel... I'm graduating this May and have already started the job search, and I definitely feel your pain about everyone wanting 3 years of experience. I really hope my job search doesn't take more than a year! I don't think I could live with that!

xok85xo 04-10-2002 09:23 AM

i hear you...i graduated in december, and unfortunately with my major there is NOTHING that i can am qualified for without my masters, or like 5 years of experience, well...hello, how am i supposed to get experience if you won't hire me!?! so for right now, i've had to take a job that i absolutely hate(i did not go to college for 4.5 years to make people's coffee) as a secretary/receptionist...i absolutely positively hate it, but have to keep telling myself its only for a few more months so that i can save $$ to move...however, the fact that there aren't any jobs has motivated me to go back to school in another year(2003)

juniorgrrl 04-10-2002 10:23 AM

Ugh. Job searching.

I'm graduating in May and need a summer job, but apparently the only thing there is that's short-term is retail slave. And that job was okay when I graduated from high school. But I am not goign to fold clothes with a degree in Information Systems. Its always depressing to look for a summer job, or job period.

Those of you that temp, how do you get started with a temp agency? Just forward your resume to them?

I was placed through a temp agency both in arizona, and here in NM..and even tho i hate my job here, i have been very happy with the efforts of the temp agency in placing me..I went through Officeteam both times, and highly recommend them..what i did was I called their office, and found out what i had to do..and in the case of officeteam, what they do is they set up an appointment for you to come in, register, take some skills tests and then they interview..for me in both instances i was working the next day..also..for Officeteam, you can register online to save you time on the day of your tests/interview..so again, if they have an office where you live, i highly recommend them..if not then just look in the phonebook, and call around to the different agencies to see what they require
hope this helps!

Even though you all have graduated could you still possible do an internship at a job that you may actually consider full-time? The pay will probably suck but you will get the needed experience and the company may even hire you into full-time position once you are done.

Those of us a few years older aren't doing well in the job market either. Jobs that require one or two years of experience are going to people with ten. And jobs that don't really require any experience, well, employers are demanding it just because they can.

The catch-22 is that if you don't work at all, potential employers will think less of you. My advice would be get a temp job, even if it's below your skill level or not in your field, because someone who has a record of being willing to work will be perceived as a better candidate than someone who is waiting for the right thing. I have friends who are waiting themselves out of the job market by refusing to consider anything "entry-level" or "below them."

Plus, too, lots of companies hire from within. I'm in the airline business, and we have lots of overqualified people working the ramp or the res center, but when the job they want opens up, guess who it'll go to. It won't ever even be advertised to the public. So if you know an industry you want to get into, be willing to start at the very bottom.

Finding a job is tough thats why I am going to school to get my masters. When I grauated with my 1st undergrad degree I got plenty of job offers from Atlanta but not here. I don't plan to be in Atlanta for about a year so I hope those job offers still come when I am ready to go up there.

I think I forgot to mention that I'm going to law school in the fall, so I just need something for the summer :) There are absolutely NO internships in IS in Louisiana, unfortunately. There's hardly any work in LA in IS at all. And, frankly, I'm not willing to leave. I've visited a lot of nice places, but I only want to live here :)

juniorgrrl, I am not current on the requirements, but check with ARKLA Gas in Shreveport, La. They have had a large MIS dept in the past and could have intern positions. There was also a shipping company in New Orleans, but I don't remember the name. Good luck.

Unfortunately, everyone has to start somewhere, and that is usually the bottom. In a couple of years it will get better. Good luck!

When I moved to Texas last summer, I registered with about 7 temp agencies right away. I only got one assigment for one agency and that last three days.
So I pounded the pavement and found a couple of other jobs that I took and wasn't to thrilled with(but hey a girl's gotta eat)
So in November, I stumbled on to this new sort of temp agency. I went in for the interview. The person I interviewed with had a customer service job come up,but that fell thru. So a couple of days later, temp agency called me a told me about a file clerk job in HR at the same company that was offering the customer service job. So I took it and was told the job was only going to last 2 weeks. It ended up lasting almost 4. At the end of the assigment, I applied for a position with the company that I was temping for. I am proud to say that I have been an employee of this company for 3 months now:D And I owe it all to Kim Morris the owner and president of American Recruiting Service

I'm working for a temp agency right now. I work for a healthinsurance company. My position wsa only supposed to be 3 weeks of filing, but I am still there and I was originially working those weeks in December.
I also did an internship with a mid size beer company over the summer (which I got through a fellow alum) but they are small and are not hiring. **Sigh**, I miss my free beer!
I'm not looking for huge....just something that will let me pay my student loans, bills, and I'd like some food too. Yeah food would be nice as well.
They tried to hire me, but beware of how temp agencies will release you...mine isn't bad, they keep you on the temp agencies payroll for 70 days...others require the company to pay part of your salary to them, something like that.
I curse the day I declared my major (communications).....I was obviously having hallucinations, lol.

Not to sound too cliche, but there is something to be said for working your way up in a company. When I graduated in 1990, I took a job as a receptionist (which I felt was below my capabilities with a BS in Elementary Education). By 1994, I had gone from receptionist to payroll clerk to marketing assistant. In 1996, I became Director of Promotions for a chain of convenience stores. Now, that wasn't the highest job on the totem pole, but it had lots of perks, and I am convinced that if I had stayed I would have advanced even higher. However, I decided to become an at-home mom instead.

So, by taking a job in your particular chosen field, despite the seemingly undesirable nature of it, you may find yourself where you wanted to be all along. Of course, a short cut would be to find the exact job you wanted from the beginning, but that's not always possible.

Be patient; you'll find what you're looking for!
