Columbia University?

I'm curious if anyone knows anything of note about the history of Greek Life at Columbia University that we don't already have on our history page. Anyone have anything we can use?

Thanks.

Re: AOII Founding

Technically, it was at Barnard College, which affliated with Columbia in 1900.

Steve,

Just nosey, but I noticed there are no women mentioned in the section on Greek Hall of Fame - as either inductees or prominent greeks that attended. Is this an oversight or are there really no women that were greek at Columbia who made something of themselves????

Our Beta chapter was started at Barnard in 1920. They folded a few years later. :(

Regarding greek women who made something of themselves: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg went to Columbia Law School after Cornell undergrad. I know it's not undergrad, but I think you'll agree that she definitely made something of herself! :D

The Columbia Greek Hall of Fame has only had one induction class so far. It's not that no Greek women made anything of themselves - just not as much as any of the first five guys we chose to induct. Keep in mind that Columbia only went co-ed in the early 1980s, and that Barnard outlawed sororities for a long time. Right now there is no sorority at Columbia more than 15 years old, but there are fraternities that date back to 1836.

(Also, only undergrads count) :-)
