Phi Eta Sigma?

Does anyone know anything (good or bad info) about Phi Eta Sigma honor society? I got an invitation to join, but I don't know too much about it...any advice?

I'm in it. I was inducted during the spring of my freshman year (as it's a Freshman Honor Society) in a nice little ceremony. Basically, that's it--I've never been contacted by the organization since then, except for maybe those "exclusive" credit card offers. I think it's just something to put on your resume, to be honest.

While we're on the subject of honor societies, are there any members of Phi Upsilon Omicron out there? I'm from the Iota chapter.

Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta are both great groups--they're honor societies for freshmen with over a 3.5 GPA. Some of the chapters are very active and others merely honor the students with the certificate.

Either way, it looks great on a resume! Congratulations on your grades and your invitation to join!

I'm in it too! If you have a high enough gpa to get into Phi Eta Sigma you will probably receive an invitation for the National Collegiate Honor Society as well pretty soon, which is pretty much the same thing but they do a lot with community service also.

It looks really good to write down on resumes and applications for campus leadership type stuff. Since most people don't do so well their freshman year due to the transition from high school, it is a pretty big honor. Especially at UW (where you go right?), I have friends that go there and it is competitive!

Congratulations! :)

I am also a member, actually the national headquarters is at my university. I got inducted, have a certificate and that is about it. I use it on resumes, though, cause honor soceities look great on there, but other than that, I have never done anything else with them. I am also in Gamma Beta Rho (something like that) Golden Key, and Kappa Alpha Tau Journalism honor society, but I really don't do much with them either, they just get to go on my resume for a small induction fee. It is worth it believe it or not, and an honor because you worked hard for your grades and someone recognized that. Good luck!

I'm going to be initiated this sunday into Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta. The two societies are separate on my campus and initiate separately but do things together. It's funny because most members of one are members of the other!

Hi!

I just wanted to add my two cents. I am (well, I've graduated already) a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta. At Cal State U. Long Beach, the two honor societies are combined as one (PES-ALD). In case you didn't know, Phi Eta Sigma used to be a fraternity, turned men's academic honor society, which went co-ed in the '70s. Alpha Lambda Delta used to be a sorority, turned women's academic honor society, which went co-ed in the '70s. Both were founded at the University of Illinois. Because some campuses had both, they essentially compted against each other. Instead of getting rid of one, they just decided to join forces on my campus. That explains the long name. :)

During my collegiate years, I was Secretary, President, Senior Advisor, President and Senior Advisor. Obviously, I really enjoyed my time in PES-ALD! (Yes, for those of you doing the math, it took me 6 years to get my BA. No, my grades had nothing to do with it. :) )

Many of the people who replied to you called it a "resume filler." :( That's one thing we specifically tried NOT to tell our new members. Of course, each campus is different, but, on my campus, we had social events, did community service and supported the university.

As with most things in life, it is what you make of it. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the National Alpha Lambda Delta Leadership Workshop in St. Louis a couple of years ago. What fun! (I still have a Louisiana State U. t-shirt from the t-shirt exchange!!). It sounds as if you don't have an ALD chapter on your campus. Too bad, it's a great organization.

National PES, I'm sorry to say, is still quite old fashioned in their operations (heh, I bet you filled out that little membership slip eh? I once had to call a lady from the national office to ask if we could photocopy them. She said we couldn't and added, in her pretty southern drawl, "We've been doing it that way since 1934." :) Meanwhile, ALD will let you e-mail a list of new members to them.) At any rate, Phi Eta Sigma does have a convention every two years I think.

I think it's a great way to get involved. Try running for an office. And hey, you can check out my chapter's website at www.pesald.org !

Congratulations on your acheivement and welcome to Phi Eta Sigma!

......Kelly :)

I'm a member too!

I am glad you are joining. It does look great on your resume to be a member of Phi Eta Sigma.
