Oscar Award History
I was so sad GC was down yesterday! :( Couldn't poise this thread.
Just curious to know everyone's views on the Oscars Sunday. I'm not sure if this is already being discussed in other forums, just wanted to post a thread here though since Sigma has made a first in this area before. Soror Hattie McDaniel was the first Black women to win Best Supporting Actress (correct me if I'm wrong) for her role in "Gone with the Wind" (can't remember the year). I'm so proud of Halle and Denezel though I haven't had the opporunity to view either film, I know their excellence from other films (I loved John Q, but I'm a big fan of Denezel). There is a lot of controversy surrounding the awards since some believe these were not the correct films for them to have such an honor bestowed. What do others think, since I haven't viewed them myself. But you best believe I have to now! :D |
Alright Halle and Denzel!!!!
SoRHO Hattie McDaniels won the oscar best support actress in 1939 in the movie Gone with the Wind... I was so excited that my girl won sunday night!!!! I am glad Denzel has finally gotten his props!!!! He is such an extrarodinay actor. I loved him in Malcolm X and remember the titans...I haven't seen John Q yet..I am like you soRHOr it is a must see now. :) |
Thanks for the year soror!
I cried during Remember the Titans, I even own it! You MUST see John Q... it's GREAT!!!! Maybe he'll get another nomination! As he said another "bird" for another year! :D |
History Correction
Although our soror, Hattie McDaniel was the first woman to win an academy award, she was also the first African-American to win the Oscar, period. While I am happy that the academy gave Halle Berry and Denzel Washington leading role awards, I just feel that Cicely Tyson, Diahnn Carroll, Whoopi Goldberg, Dorothy Dandridge and Angela Bassett should have one, too.
-TRSimon Not to knock Halle, but there is no person in the world who can look me in the eye and say Whoopi didn't earn that award for The Color Purple without being on crack!!! You just can't!!! :D |

Poor ol' Whoopi....
Whoopi got hers for ghost... but, dang, "The Color Purple" was the illest. I had to go and get the DVD and I still cry. I think Nia Long is overdue for an oOcar-worthy role. She plays the hell out of the wifey roles but she needs to step outside of the "Urban Romantic Comedy" genre.-- In fact, everyone really needs to step out of that, at least for a little while. But, as long as Will Smith doesn't have one, I can sleep well at night. |
I'm feelin' you guys on this but I have to ask...Did you see that MESS that Paltrow was wearing? http://www.plauder-smilies.de/eek7.gifhttp://www.plauder-smilies.de/sad/shakehead.gif
what the ?@#!?# was she thinking??I think she was high on something when she bought that dress..if you can call it that. I'm happy for Halle, Denzel, Sidney, and SoRHOr McDaniel. :) |
Oscars
Greetings SoRHOrs and sistah friends- this is my first reply to a forum question but I have been visiting for a couple of weeks now. I was very pleased on Sunday when Halle and Denzel won but I wish more would have been said about SoRHOr McDaniel. What she accomplished was so great because it was darn near impossible. She was blasted by her people for even playing the role!! Blacks then felt that the role was an insulting STEREOTYPE of black women and frankly it was but those were the only roles offered to blacks at that time. Despite this SHE triumphed and I am PROUD to call her SORHOR!!! I hope that this double blessing on Sunday will indeed "open" those doors and knock those barriers so that more people of color can be allowed to express their talents and be rewarded by their peers for doing so.

Sorhors and sisterfriends,
We also cannot forget Morgan Freeman he also should have about 2 or three oscars in his trophy chest! The man can really act! Serioussigma22:cool: |
When Halle cried, I cried too. I am so happy for her and Denzel. And her gown, stunning as usual. I was less than thrilled with her Jada and Vivica shoutout. I'm sorry but neither is Oscar worthy.
In the latest issue of Essence, Nia Long did mention that she'd like some more challenging roles. I hope that happens for her. |
Oh see, I wasn't going to say anything, but since NinjaPoodle brought it up...

Sorhors and sisterfriends,
That's the truth! Some of these stars know that they look a mess even before the go out the door! So why torture the viewing audience with such strange outfits and crazy a$$ hair- dos!:D Serioussigma22:p |
