insurance
Odd question. I belong to a very small local (10 brothers), and lately we've become aware that we've left ourselves wide open to legal problems because we have no insurance. Now we're afraid to do anything, anywhere because we just don't know what could happen. Does anyone know what sort of insurance a houseless fraternity needs? And where we can find it? Our school's Greek Affairs office is clueless.

You might want to look at other national GLO's websites and see what their risk reduction policies are. They're all pretty similar but if you check out one or two that should give you a decent idea.

Try contacting:
Kirklin & Company, LLC Insurance and Risk Management Services PO Box 540673 Omaha, NE 68154-0673 Sorry, I don't have a phone number. They support an organization called FRMT, Ltd. which is a group made up of twenty something Greek Letter Organizations. This is a group formed at least partially out of self defense when fraternities found themselves unable to get liability insurance. Quoting from "FRMT News," "The 21 member fraternities of the FRMT, Ltd. program are in business together. Loss experience of any one member fraternity will affect the future insurance costs of all 21 member fraternities." It may be that a local fraternity isn't a good fit for a group like this, but perhaps they can recommend something else for you if that's the case. The position you are in is really dangerous. If one of your members does something stupid, you could all be held accountable. That would be a financial disaster for the rest of your lives. That's unfortunate, but it is reality in this litigious society we live in today. Best of luck to you. |
