Egyptian Dog
Ok, as I've said, I am new to this site but I love what I've seen so far. Now for my question. I was taught that the Alpha's originated the original hand sign for "The egyptian Dog," that the Zeta's now use as their "Cat" hand sign. Zeta's seem to get really offended when my brothers throw up the alternate "Egyptian Dog" sign instead of the "so-called" traditional "Alpha Sign." I have not really found any research on the truth bind this but if anyone could shed some light on this subject I would appreciate it.

Still Wondering
Ok, ok, I know I'm new, but you guys don't have to ignore me.....come on! If anyone has any knowledge on this halla at me.
Thanks:) |
I have been coast to coast, north and south and met many of my Sorors and many Alphas as well but I've not heard of what you are talking about and I'd have to give further research before responding to your question.

Now that I am a Soror I can tell you all how funny I have always thought Dexter is when he makes his comments. Dexter you are so direct and upfront some people may be offended but I always find you hilarious. I mean that in a good way. :D

I haven't traveled as extensively as my soror Pretty Kitty, but I have known Alphas all my life and I have never seen anyone throw up anything other than the well-known Alpha sign.

 I've done some checking and none of the bruhs have heard of this dog sign. It must either be a state thing or a chapter thing. Either way I don't do ANY other sign than that of the Black and OLLLLLLLDDDDDD Gold of A PHI A.

Mistaken "Egyptian Dog"
I think I know what D-Ception is talking about. The thing that initially threw me was the "Dog" part. As most know, the "Dog" symobolism is traditionally used by the Ques. The "Egytptian" part sounds more familiar to Alpha.
The sign, I believe you are talking about, which is "similar" to one used by the zetas is actually called the: EURAYIS (Spelling may vary) The eurayis is the SNAKE symoblizing the 3rd Eye or Pineal Gland. It is shown on the crown of many egyptian pharoahs and sphinxes. Look at the King Tut or Sphinx head. Many Bros used this sign in steps or step shows, and RARELY throw it up when taking flics or posing. It is done similarly to the Ques hook, except your hand is curved infront of your face (not to the sides) and your tricep and hand is parallel to the ground. It looks like the Eurayis(snake) on top of the pharoahs headdress/crown. I've seen the zetas do a "similar" sign except they have their arms and hands facing the side instead of infront of their face and their arms aren't elevated like the Ques. It symoblizes a "Z" rather than a eurayis/snake. All three signs are "similar" but different enough not to step on anyones toes. Who knows who came up with what 1st . NOBODY has ANY DOCUMENTATION that is verifiably available. Don't get it twisted though, there is NOTHING associated with DOG about ALPHA...our symobols are EGYPTIAN. |
Very good insight, A PHi ACE. But I think that what d-ception is referring to is the hand signal with the pinky and the index finger pointing up and the ring and middle fingers touching the thumb. When I was an undergrad, my dean talked about an egyptian dog and how the Zeta's handsign was of an egyptian dog, but he never talked about it being a symbol of Alpha (offical or otherwise). He just referenced it as another way other orgs in the Pan had to pay respect to Alpha in one way or another. Though I feel you on the snake, "z" and omega hooks analogy, it can get confusing.

Thanks again!
Thank you to everyone who replied to my question....however let me clarify a few things. First of all, when I said egyption dog, I didn't mean it to have any real "Dog" meaning. I already know that Alpha has no connection with anything dealing with a dog. I appologize for my lack of wording or specificity.....however, this sign has been used by brothers in my chapter (Iota Pi for all those who want to question) and I just wanted to know if anyone else had ever heard or scene of it.
The Zeta's at my Alma Mater have seen us use this before. I don't have anything to say about who owns what but I just know that I have seen it used as an alternate sign. Me personally, I use the traditional sign and always will. I hope I didn't offend anyone, and for those whom I may have confused I am sorry. Let me say this though....understand that everyone is from different places and have been taught different things. Just as some brothers are made a little different than other brothers, we don't suggest to those brothers that they weren't made or taught properly. Having said that, I would suggest that you take this into consideration when responding to questions that brothers, individuals, whomever might have on any particular subject. I am not sensitive, nor am I incapable of taking criticism due to my ignorance, but I am new to this site and some responses can be viewed as unfriendly. By the way...my name is D-Ception not Deception! Thank You |

Greetings All,
I went to some old School Phrat(50+ Years) and they clarified this issue for me. Believe it or not one of the first hand signs of Alpha was the Zeta Hand Symbol which represented the Egyptian Dog and it was used by many chapters........The reson it was called an egyptian dog is because during the older process freshmen were termed "dogs" and were hazed during their first year. Those interesting in becoming Alphas we termed as such as were all others.......(remeber I am just passing info) The hand sign of Alpha evolved into what it is now as a standard but there was such a sign at one time being used by Alpha. Finally
Thanks for the clarification bruh. Obviously your resources are better than mine because I couldn't find out shyt!!! But at least young brother D-Ception now has some understanding of it's origin and given me further insight into the fraternity. We learn something new everyday.
