TRUE Musical Artists...are they becoming extinct?

Ok, this is off the subject, but I didn't want to start an entire new thread. I just want an opinion of my fellow music lovers on GC.

I attended the Prince concert last night....I have to say I was a little disappointed. I understand "The Artist" wants to move forward from his 80's heyday, but he BARELY sang 4 of his old hits, and he DIDN'T CLOSE BY SIGING PURPLE RAIN


I do like his "new" musical vein, its jazzy, mellow and funky. (My friend calls it the Prince caberet) but for me it was a matter of ecomonics. I understand and welcome his wanting to change (he talked alot about changing his life, and reading the Bible); and I understand that he may not want to sing his more risque hits, but I paid $70.00 for that ticket, and I wanted to hear a little bit more from the early years!

Whew!, after all that venting, here's my question. The "Artist" mentioned that there is not enough music on the radio nowadays. What artist can you see Prince passing his torch too? (i.e. reading music, composing, playing multiple instruments, singing, guitar virtuoso) I tried to think of someone, but I can't come up with a name. Is there anyone out there now that is that talented all the way around? Or is he the last of a dying breed?

Being original isn't what makes money. I think that's the bottom line. So many great artists are out there and cant get a deal because of the Britney Spears etc type of people who simply have the look. I got into an argument about India Arie vs. Alicia Keyes. I felt that though India may not be as "pretty" in the eyes of society but has twice as much talent as Keyes. The friend felt that Keyes was more attractive and therefore more talented. I love creative music. I am not a big rap fan and prefer soul, and R & B. For those of you from DC/ Howard, I am a huge WHUR fan.

In short, until being creative and talented is something that people will run out and buy, we'll stay listening to music that is poppy and has a great looking singer/dancer/actor.

Hmmm, someone as gifted as Prince? I'll probably have to say Lenny Kravitz, in terms of instrument ability as well as composing and performing and all of that. Babyface is up there too, but he's more of a songwriter. Dave Matthews is also very talented, albeit not an instrumental virtuoso. Can't believe Prince didn't close with Purple Rain though.

With the India Arie vs. Alicia Keys thing, Keys is more flashy and well, more in tune to the hiphop fashion sense and the general enviornment of hiphop/r&B, hell, she even talks the part, lots of slang and the way she carries herself as well.

Arie on the other hand, to me, is the next coming of Tracy Chapman, and thats a good thing. Her style is different from Keys in that it is more acoustically grounded, it's at a different audience maybe. Less dance, more lyrical stories with her songs.

The "pretty" issue though, is one that is of little concern to anyone who listens to music with ears unaffected by what they see visually. Both girls have exceptional talent and don't rely on the good old roland TR808 for their drum samples, ya know...
boom..chick...boom boom boom boom..chick...boom boom...boom..chick...alright, well, lets not get carried away now.;)

I was trying to think of his name. I saw him on something and immediately thought "Prince!". I think he'd be worthy of the torch.

That's exactly my point! Look how many artists you have named, each has one area of expertise, but you need to combine them to match "The Purple One".
