New trend in tipping
 

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this situation (I'm sure you have) and how you handled it.

Situation:
I was at restuarant with 3 people the other day. The check comes. Of course the waitress puts it all on one tab. Her service was okay, but not outstanding. We look at the bill and pay our share. I don't remember the exact total, but is how it breaks down:

Me- My change should've been $10
girl B- change = $5
boy A =$10
boy B- pays with a debit card, but adds $5 for a tip.

She brings boy B's receipt and then asks us if we wanted our change? We decide to let it slide and not act a fool.

My question is this: How is she going to ask us if we wanted something that belongs to us anyway. I know servers don't make much, but she just designated herself a $30 tip and I don't think her service warranted it.

What would you guys do?

Yes, I have noticed it! I think some of them are taking it to the extreme (common sense, ya know?)! If someone is only getting a few cents back, THEN ask "Would you like your change?" But $10 is a bit ridiculous. I went to lunch with someone once that told the person "___ yeah I want my change!" They had given the waitress 20.00 and their meal was only 8.00. I don't think that waitress will be asking that the same way anymore. I usually ignore it and say "yes".

Normally, I'll tell them at the time I hand them the money that I either want my change or that it's for them. No confusion because they can get a little dense :)

A $30 TIP?!?!?!?!

I'd never ask a table if they wanted their change back, knowing I'd be getting a huge tip! That's just wrong! I wonder if their rest. managers know they do this, or if it's something they picked up?

Personally I've never had anyone ask me if I wanted change back...they just give it!

I WOULD HAVE ASKED FOR MY CHANGE. I KNOW THAT THEY NEED TIPS BUT $30 FROM ONE TABLE.

QUESTION: HOW MUCH WAS THE FOOD BECAUSE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LEAVE 15%.:p :p

Tipping Gone Too Far
 

DEAR ABBY: Please tell "All Tipped Out" to hold onto her hat. There is a doctor's office in our town -- a beautiful facility with lots of employees and patients -- that does the same thing, although in a slightly less blatant way.


A friend of mine went to this office to have a procedure done. It was not performed by the doctor, but by a technician. When she went to pay at the reception desk, she was asked if she would like to "tip" the technician.


I have no problem tipping in establishments where I know the employees are not receiving minimum wage and depend on tips to supplement their incomes. However, I have no doubt that technician was earning more than minimum wage, and I don't think it was appropriate to ask a patient for a tip.


I will be more on my toes than my friend was. I will say, "Perhaps the doctor should give his technician a raise if she needs tips." -- ALWAYS A NEW TWIST IN WYOMING


DEAR NEW TWIST: What you have described seems more like a demand than a request, and it's appalling.

I'm not sure if this is universal... but at Olive Garden, if you pay with cash they don't bring you loose change. If your change is $7.69, you get 7.00 back. If you ask for the rest of your change, they get an attitude!

now that is just a hot azz mess and they know it, if you ask me to tip your overpaid behind you better be saving my life not checking my blood pressure.

That is stupid. If one had planned to leave a tip it probably would have been more that 69 cents. They are shortchanging themselves and losing customers.

If they tried that, I would surely ask, "Where's my 19 cents?" It's mine, so I should have the right to decide what to do with it. :rolleyes:

If you are working in the service industry as an adult, then you should be aware that everyone does not tip well (or at all...busters). It's a risk you take in that position. If you're employer has not installed a policy of automatically including the tip in the bill, then you still shouldn't have the gumption to ask for the tip. Earn the tip.

LOL, I really need to wake up. I saw the title of this thread and thought it was about cow tipping. :)

As far as the Olive Garden situation.... When I was serving if there was change I would just add an extra dollar (knowing I would probably get it back) Most restaurants have their servers make and keep their own change so it can be difficult to come up with pennies.

I would always say "I'll be back with your change." and wait for a response. People will tell you what they want then.

I waited tables for 7 years and I always asked when I picked up the check "Do we need change here?", if they do they would say yese or if not they would tell me to keep it. Bottom line if someone is going to tip the take care of it. If you all were planning to leave 15% or had already she was out of order but don't even get me started with "our" people and tipping!
