Ananda Lewis Show
.
|
I saw it!
To be honest that wasn't the best step performance I have ever seen but it was just great to see us out there to begin with so I can't be too critical! (I know all the stepmasters out there feel me, lol). IMO the best stepping is at coming out shows. Maybe part of that is the pure joy that you feel in the atmosphere though, and remembering what yours was like.... (do I sound old? I am only 2 years and one day old in AKA, I have just been hanging with my seasoned Sorors too much, lol) If you want to see one of those you have to ask the BGLO members on your campus very very nicely and they might let you- it varies from yard to yard- sometimes they are public events, sometimes not..... |
STEPPING!!!
Hey What's up?!?
i'm glad to see that steppers are finally getting recognized. i'm part of an Asian American Interest Sorority, and am actually the step mistress for my chapter. Sometimes people criticize us 'cuz they think we're biters or something. I just think that we're displaying pride... I would like to hear from people that have experienced haters... basically trying to overcome racism in something that should be color blind... Thanks For Your Time.... representin' alpha Kappa Delta Phi Sorority, Inc... |
My NPC sorority did an event with the AKA chapter on my campus, and they did a step show to kick it off, it was AMAZING! It is such an incredible way to show greek unity and pride!

I think the Ananda Show got cancelled in my area because I haven't seen it in a while.

from www.floanthony.com Rumors have been circulating that the “Ananda Lewis Show” has been canceled but industry insiders say don’t plan on it. Though the former MTV veejay’s daytime talk show has struggled in the ratings, averaging anywhere from a 1.1 to 1.3 rating, sources say that the syndication company King World will probably allow the show to run another season to see if the ratings improve. “No we are not cancelled,” said Nicky Wright, show publicist. “We are in the middle of February sweeps and we will look at the ratings and know what is going to happen then.” |

I love Iyanla's books, I really do. But that woman should not have had a whole hour! It was just bad- her laguh even got annoying:rolleyes: |
On my campus this past fall one of the BGLO's came to our meeting (Delta Zeta) and invited us to the coming out show. It was awesome! Anyone who has a chance should go see one. You can really see the closeness and the love they have for their organization. It was like nothing I had ever seen before.

Color Blind?
What should be color blind? I am proud of my ethnicity and I don't want it ignored. I'm sure most "ethnic" GLOs are proud of their heritage, as well.
I think your situation is not about color but creativity and respect. You guys should engage the other GLOS in dialogue about this. But it seems like a big deal is being made out of a recreational activity. Are you getting drama when you do your service events and outreach? |

Tell the truth gul, tell the truth! People get hot when they see someone else doing their moves! If I went to a show and saw ANY other GLO doing "serious matter" (outside of the parodies which we ALL do) you know we would have something to say about it! How unthinkable! What a breach of etiquette! But as I said in another thread, I think that when these groups do something original and create their own traditions and nuances then it is all good. The more time they are around the more distinctive they will become and the less you will see the "biting" and the less bad feeling they will generate. |
Well I'm responding to the inferences that people have made that my group has in fact "bited" to receive such treatment. In fact this is quite untrue. For example, in the current step routine that I created I am integrating classical indian dancing with traditional filipino dancing with korean and chinese fan dancing.... Truly, in fact we are just using the tradition as a base for our own creativity. However, I do understand your concern when you do see someone use your own steps/culture and misuse it. At a stepshow I attended, I saw a bglo use traditional filipino dancing culture and equipment and use it. Couldn't I have said that they were biting off of some of my sisters' cultures? Instead, I thought it was very innovative. I guess it is the way you approach things... Maybe you could think of it as flattery if someone was attempting to imitate you. Obviously they felt your creation was so innovative and awesome that they wanted to duplicate it. In fact, another group on my campus had "stolen" some of our steps from the previous year and performed them. At first it was kinda hard to watch, but I just recognized that they really liked what we had done. I would have liked that they somehow recognized us for coming up with those moves, but whatever..... You can't enforce much... So I guess I agree with both sides, but there are times you still encounter groups who give you slack before you even stomp or clap your hands just for the fact that you are attempting to use a part of their culture. That's what I'm addressing.... I've attended some events where people would think we were "trying to be a bglo". I never understood that, and that's what I'm attempting to get some answers to.....

the issue that many nphc chapters have with other organizations adopting stepping is that there is no appreciation or understanding of its origins. it is an nphc tradition, no doubt. and tradition is rooted in history, a history that multicultural organization don't share. groups start doing it because they think it's cool, not out of a real respect and that is a problem for me. all too often multicultural organizations pick up things from this place and that and call it original and you will always get heat for that. to clarify, that is not hatred. that is disdain for an organization capitalizing off the contributions of another culture. we had the asian student association come to our nphc meeting to discuss themes that might be objectionable to them, in an effort to avoid disrespecting anyone.
we have a couple of groups down here in georgia and there has already been tension because those groups have crossed the line between tribute and disrespect. they had taken to using racial slurs (the n-word) to refer to each other, claiming that it was a part of their "culture". some girls calling themselves "Deltas" and making a handsign very similar to Delta Sigma Theta's sign. all of these things leave a sour taste in my mouth and make me question what is really going on. |
DSTBRAT, I think you pointed out some important things. I would like to learn a little bit about the culture which you point out. What are the true origins of stepping. Perhaps I am at fault to for not truly recognizing the foundations of the artform, but forgive me as I'm still trying learn. I do however believe I know about the organization whom you mention at the end of your entry. Please believe that not all organizations think like they do.... Thanks for the information, I appreciate it....
