General shift to a more positive image.

I have read a number of postings that express concern over the distorted view the media present regarding Greeks, and the overall opinion among the general public that seems to buy into this rather slanted view. However, it does seem to me that this is changing dramatically as the events of the last few months continue to develop. Since the attack of September 11th the nation seems united under, and massively supportive of, our President who was, incidentally, president of his house as an undergraduate and remains active in alumni affairs. I note with approval that many of the senior leaders of the administration are Greek alums and that both houses of congress are well populated by Greek alums. A substantial representation of the Armed Services leadership seems to be strongly Greek as well. Perhaps leadership is the key factor here. Lessons of loyalty, dedication, comradship, determination, and responsibility are learned as pledges and are carried through life. These men and women are now the ones who lead the nation through this and any other crisis. Not too surprising that the public image is changing and the Greek community is being seen in a much more positive light. Nice to be seen as the solid core around which to rally in times of crisis!

Well said. It never ceases to amaze me how many of our noblest leaders are fraternity men and women. Being part of something that fosters good character and powerful ideals during the time when you are defining your identity plays a powerful role in our lives.

Kevin

Isn't that the way things always work though? Take the military for example. Up until recently, people were only too happy to cut military spending, yet after 9/11, people are more like: "yeah, the US Military is gonna kick Osama's @ss!!" The military will always be there and will always do the same kick-@ss job they always do. The question is, will we always be there to support them? The same argument can be applied to our nation's leaders, both government and private sector, most of whom "incidently" just "happen" to be Greek (gee, I wonder why ;) ). Now that the nation finally has a reason to support our (Greek) leaders, everyone's happy and the Greek Community is all of a sudden being portrayed in a more positive light. How long will this last? Who knows.
