New sorority at IU?
 

I was just wondering if anyone knows what new sorority is supposed to be coming to IU. As a greek community, Panhel made us vote on allowing another sorority to colonize here...we all agreed to let them come. The only thing is that Panhel won't tell us who it is and I am too impatient! If anyone knows, I would appreciate the info!

I suspect the only people who will be able to answer your question are either the HQ of the sorority in question (which obviously doesn't help you since if you knew that, you wouldn't have started this thread), or the people on your campus who have been in contact with that HQ to begin colonization. You may be able to figure out who those people are if you do enough snoopin' around on campus. Good luck to you!

There is a new chapter trying to colonize here. I'm excited because my friends and I are going to be working with the group who's working with the nationals. I've been corresponding through email with a woman named Leslie for a week about colonization and expansion. Last night, she told me about the new chapter, but she didn't say who it was. Hopefully, I'll learn more soon.

..I heard this, too, and I am SO thrilled that a new chapter will be opening at IU--When I was a freshman (in 1993) we had 22 chapters! And now there are only 19!!!

I DID hear a few rumors as to what group is coming...but I don't want to spread info that I don't know to be true.

But if it's who I think it is, I'm so excited!!!

Can't wait to find out--whomever finds out first, please let us all know!!

I am a Gamma Phi at Indiana State and I want to tell you girls congratulations on getting another sorority on campus. That shows that Greek Life is going strong on the IU campus. We would love to have another one join us, but we cannot due to the fact that the chapters here already are struggling with numbers. It is so awesome that your Greek Life is growing. Keep it up Girls!!!

Just wanted to give all those interested an update. I read in the school paper that the sorority that is going through the process to start colonizing at IU is Sigma Sigma Sigma. I am so excited for these girls! AOII recolonized my freshman year and it is something I will never forget. It is so amazing to look back and see how hard we all worked to make AOII-Beta Phi what it is today! These girls are going to have such a great time! This will make 20 sororities on the IU campus!.

What I've heard

Fraternities are ECSTATIC about having another sorority. More girls, more socials and more pairings.

Sororities are mixed. Some feel that when AOII opened up 3 years ago (which by the way, is doing an AWESOME job for a relatively new sorority) that it hurt numbers across the board. I personally disagree, seeing as how 1,000 girls STILL arent making it through rush.

Because of the intense rush process for women at IU, some girls think that a 20 party will be a bit much (for the girls going through recruitment). I think that adding another sorority (or two...hopefully :D ) will take some of the competitiveness off of the rushees and force it onto the sororities....

This will add at least another 100 spots for women.

We'll see what happens. I'm concerned about housing for this new group. IU is VERY strict on land and there are no new spaces to build. Where will this new group have a house. Part of AOII's instant success was that they A.) Were smart and rushed after formal recruitment was over (to get the great girls who either didnt feel like going through 18 party or for one reason or another got cut) and B.) Because they were able to show off that new southern style mansion that they had made plans to build.

Wow! 1000 aren't getting through rush. When I was in college, we didn't have 1000 rushees or sorority sisters!:eek:

Aren't there a bunch of fraternity houses standing vacant at IU? Couldn't a new sorority buy and/or lease there? Or are the fraternities' nationals hanging on to them in case they want to come back.

It sucks that there is so much rushee interest (definitely NOT the case everywhere) going to waste for lack of a house, of all things. I know it's different everywhere, but it just breaks my heart to think of so many girls being denied a chance at sisterhood, and some of them probably coming away feeling very anti-Greek, just because there is such an emphasis on the physical structure.

Housing at IU for the Greek system is becoming a thorn for those who want to expand to IU.

There ARE vacant fraternity houses at IU BUT their nationals are holding onto them so that they can come back. This is a strong greek system that everyone wants to be a part of.

There also many fraternities without houses waiting to buy property when it comes available.

As for "A LOT" I would say no. There are currently only 3 vacant fraternity houses. One of them has been bought for next year and the house that they will vacate has been taken as well. As for the other two houses, their nationals are holding onto them pretty tight.

Also, fraternity houses at IU, while being relatively nice, are no where NEAR nice enough for a sorority to live in, much less to recruit with. Unlike other greek systems, where you have "medium sized houses" and large houses, a fraternity/sorority cant really exist here by living in a residential home. If they could pull it off, kudos!

The only thing that I could suggest is for another "extension" just off of campus to be created for greek housing. The university owns pretty much EVERYTHING so it will be tough finding land that they dont own. I know, I've looked at the plot maps myself.

I can agree somewhat here. I'm from a town near Bloomington, and go to school only an hour away. While ALL of the houses look awesome from the outside, I just recently visited the Lambda Chi house at IU on Monday. While it is a nice house inside and out, it is obviously lived in by 40 guys!
