Winter Recruitment?
I know this is still a ways away, but I am very excited to rush this year and seeing all of the posts about fall recruitment is only making me more excited/nervous!
I will be attending a small Midwestern liberal arts school that practices winter rush. There are only four sororities, one of which is national, and from what I can see, rush appears to be very informal. There aren't "parties," but instead events that the sororities host each night in different locations that PNMs can choose to attend. Last year, the sororities did things like "Spa Night," t-shirt making, or a movie night. The week ends with an invite-only event, followed by an invite-only semiformal dinner. One concern I have with this is that most of the events are held at the same time - am I expected to spend only a half hour at each event in order to attend all of them, or is that considered rude? How can I ensure that I stand out if it isn't possible to attend every event? Also, I know that it is always best to look put-together for rush, but since this appears to be fairly informal as well as taking place during the (freezing) winter, what would be appropriate? I was thinking a nice sweater, jeans, and boots might be a good choice. I'm sorry if these questions are annoying or inappropriate or are coming at the wrong time! I'm just very jealous of the girls who get to go through recruitment now, rather than wait another semester! |
I think these questions are so specific to your campus, I would suggest contacting the student life office and getting some advice from them. Once you're on campus, I'm sure you'll pick up even more information about the process. Good luck!! :)
As a general piece of advice about winter recruitment on a small campus, I would make sure you make a good impression first semester. Sorority members will be checking out the freshmen women during the fall. Many impressions will be formed before the actual recruitment week. Be friendly to sorority members, make a good impression in your classes, join a club or two in areas that interest you, earn good grades, etc. |
If the only invite - only event is the one at the end of the week, I'm guessing the rest of the week is not a progression of events becoming more "important" in the same way as NPC rush. They're just different events on different nights to make things a little less stressful on the sisters and the rushees. I would double check this with the Student Affairs Office however. You definitely should not be made to feel that you're being rude because you want to meet all the sororities.
