Greek Life at UGa

Just wondering what Greek Life was like at UGa...I may be spending a lot of time in Athens in the future, and I was wondering. I know that if I end up in Athens, I would like to be a Chapter Advisor. I heard Rush is rather competitive, but what happens AFTER Rush?

It's pretty interesting AlphaChiGirl. Our chapter is unfortunately having dire circumstances, but we are working hard to keep them there, as they have a lot of heritage and history. It's a good southern school group of sororities with what seems to be a good system. Carnation may know more than I though http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hey guys--

Mostly I just know about the awful time that rushees have, which seems to be due to some sororities pre-selecting who they want also to the fact that you practically have to have a 4.0 and a 1200 to get into UGA so basically, if you thought you had a great resume before--forget that! Everyone is outstanding!

Alphachigirl, y'all got an outstanding pledge from our hometown last fall!

Rush at UGA is extremely competitive. Our girls work very hard throughout the year to get ready for formal Rush and their hard work definitely paid off last year.

I'm on their Alumnae Advisory Board, so I got to see firsthand how they handled Rush week. It was a lot of fun, and the girls did a great job.

The biggest thing is to make sure that your house stands out since there are so many on campus. The girls try their best to make sure that rushees go away with a lasting impression of Delta Zeta. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

After Rush, the girls start the whole cycle over again, teaching the new girls songs that they'll need to know, practicing for skit, etc. It's a never-ending process at UGA, and I think it's like that for all sororities on campus, not just DZ.

From what I have heard, you can almost guess what sorority you'll be in base don where you grew up. I don't remember exactly the names of the towns, but it was basically like, "If you're from XYZ, you'll be an ABC, if you're from DEF, you'll be a GHI," etc. Some people, I hear, felt like the chapters, or some of the chapters restrict themselves too much to these same hometowns...like a self-fulfilling prophecy. They have those girls, so they know the new prospectives from that same town better, so they take them over someone else, etc.

I can't speak for other sororities on this issue, but Delta Zeta's chapter at UGA doesn't restrict membership to specific hometowns. Our girls are from all over the place. The majority, of course, are from the state of Georgia since UGA is a state school, but as far as hometowns go, the girls do not really make that an issue.
