Academic National Probation- Seeking Reinstatement
 

Just a brief story: I got placed on National Probation a year and a half ago. I was taking very difficult classes and was struggling to get a good grade- In result- National Probation.
Since then, I have made the dean's list, I have made above a 3.0 for the past 3 semesters, and I even have an amazing internship with a huge company.
Anyways, I am going to apply to be reinstated this week, but I know the vote has to be unanimous. I just know it is impossible to get 200 girls to vote yes to you.

I am seeking to see if anyone here has any experience with this? Whether you personally have been reinstated or if you know someone. Or any general advice would be great.

It doesn't work that way in my GLO. Your GPA alone determines whether you are on academic probation. Once it returns to the stated level, you are aautomatically off. This sort of thing that you are talking about sort of surprises me. Maybe you should talk with your chapter adviser or regional rep.

Seconded. This needs to be discussed with a chapter adviser/your IHQ. I don't personally know of a GLO that works this particular way--academic-based "probation" is semester by semester--so it may be best to reach out to someone from your org directly.

Well, in my organization, there is a vote, but it takes three straight semesters of a GPA below the standard to be put on probation.

You just said that you made the deans list last semester, but said that Shellfish's scenario of 3 semesters of not making grades is what happened to you. Whaaaaat? Perhaps explaining what your grade situation was semester by semester would help us understand.

I joined the sorority Fall 2012.
I got placed on probation Spring 2014.
Since then, I have made above a 3.0 GPA and made the dean's list this past semester.
I had 3 bad semesters because I was trying to get into the nursing school and was struggling with the classes- Making C's instead of B's and A's. Once I got placed on probation, I wanted nothing but to be off of it, but I knew I had to better myself- So I did. And I have changed my grades around completely

So if I understand correctly....

Fall 2012 1st semester fresh yr pledged, didn't make grades
Spring 2013 2nd semester Fresh Yr didn't make grades
Fall 2013 1st semester Soph yr didn't make grades

placed on probation

Spring 2014 2nd semester Soph yr on probation, but made 3.0+
Fall 2014 1st semester Junior yr on probation, but made 3.0+
Spring 2015 2nd Semester Jr Yr on probation, made 3.0+

Is this right?

My organization doesn't operate this way, so I have no personal experience in this area.

I do want to commend you for working hard these past few semesters and turning it around. I have no idea how the vote will turn out, but I wish you the best in everything.

Do you have an opportunity to speak or plead your case prior to the vote? If so, I would start with the facts, as you did here. Include study habits that have changed, etc., that show that the past 3 semesters are more indicative of the student that you will continue to be. Be clear, concise, confident, and professional in your delivery. After you outline the facts, conclude with a few sentences about your heartfelt love for the chapter and your desire to be a contributing sister again.

In other words, make sure the chapter sees that you "own" the mistakes that you made, that you have taken steps to improve your study habits and academic performance, and that moving forward you are very committed to academic success. They will need to see that they can count on you to not get into academic trouble again.

But again, my organization doesn't have this system for academic probation, so please take everything with a grain of salt. I defer to any member of your own organization on the best course of action.

Thank you! I know many girls who tried to get reinstated for other reasons( posing for racy pictures that got posted online) and did not get back in, but obviously my case is much different. It is just worrisome that I have to get 200+ girls to vote yes.

I have to admit that I'm very curious about which organization gives so much power to the full chapter. A 100% vote of the full chapter seems like a huge hurdle, and from others are saying, this seems quite unique.
