Graduate members?
 

I'm curious about this.....let's say your college or university has graduate programs, and there are local GLOs there. Are they receptive to having graduate students pledge their houses?

We just had a senior who will be a grad student next year start asking about pledging. I think it's great. Deciding to join a sorority can be rewarding any time, and I think a grad student pledging has the potential to really make it meaningful because for whatever reason they decided not to do it in undergrad, they had a change of heart/mind. My experience with changes like that is that the person really changing is committed to their change because they had to really consider the matter to make the switch. So naturally, I'm thrilled about the possibility.

The local I worked with as an undergrad did have a clause in the bylaws allowing graduate students to be members. The idea behind that was that there was no reason why a grad who was interested should be denied membership. I mean, they may be busier with research or thesis writing...but, if they're willing to participate, Why not? And it helps offer an opportunity for grad students that NPC groups cannot fill.

I am a second year graduate student who pledged Sigma Alpha Mu last Fall.

A lot of fraternities in my school are eager to take in a graduate student. They are a safe bet when it comes to scholarship, as graduate students must maintain a 3.0+ GPA to stay in school.

The downside to taking in a graduate student is that they may not have the time to pledge. I can testify to this: Pledging, taking graduate courses, and working as a T.A. was definately a struggle! But miraculously I made it through the semester relatively unscathed, and I am now proud to be a Sammy!
