How long should you wait to go national and what is the process

Hello to all my fellow greeks out there. I have some questions that has been on my mind for awhile now. My fraternity has turned a year old this past friday, and we were wondering when is a good time for your fraternity or soror to go national. We the members of the fraternity always think long term at everything we do. But my question is How long do you have to wait until you go national? My second question is Do you choose another greek council to go under or what if the greek council your under is all local what do u do or does it not matter at all? And my third question is When is a good time to do an expasion to other local colleges in your area?. So if anyone can help me out and give me some tips on how to go by doing this that will be great.

Thanks to all whom reads this message and replies to it also. GOD Bless you all and remember Greeeksss Rulesssss.

Check out this thread... it is the chronicle of a girl who is taking her local national. It might give you a clue to the process at least!

My local which is now Alpha Sigma Alpha waited a year. We busted our butts and did all kinds of philanthropy and really became visible did like 1-2 recruitments per semester to get members and we are now a colony. We get pinned in on March 3.

Going National

Hey there! I was part of a local chapter for 2 years that just went national this past fall. The way it worked for us was that the university mandated that all Greek organizations either affiliate with a national or end at the end of this school year. They had one weekend where 10 national sororities were brought in (fraternities came the next weekend). We presented to them and they presented to us. We ranked 1-10 and they ranked 1-5 (the number of local groups on campus). Then our Director of Greek Life matched us up. We've had consultants living with us all year and the transition has been great. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it to be nationally affiliated. We had a Greek council, which is now split into IFC and Panhellenic. If you have any more questions about going national, please don't hesitate to ask. My chapter has been through a lot this year (our local was the oldest on campus...25 years), but I couldn't be more positive about going national. Good luck!

My chapter was a local sorority for 2 years before we went national. The group was initially formed with the intention of becoming a chapter of AEPhi, but the campus Panhel didn't want to extend to another national at that time, so a local sorority was formed instead. 2 years later, we approached Panhel again, and they agreed to let us seek out a national org. Since we'd been interested in AEPhi from the first, we said so in our letter to NPC - AEPhi came to present to us, and a match was made. :)

There's no real set time limit, unless your local IFC or Panhel sets one. I don't know how fraternity colonization works, but if your local is strong on campus, go ahead and seek out nationals that aren't already on your campus. The worst they can say is no - but somebody's bound to say yes.

Good luck :)

Hey! I am in a local sorority at UCSC. Actually, wishinhopin is my sis. We're supposed to pick three NPC orgs with another local sorority here. Some of the NPC's that we really like aren't looking to expand here. I was wondering if we should go for the ones that have had an interest in us, or should we wait it out for awhile and see if the other orgs, that we realllly like are ready to expand?

I say go with the ones that expressed interest. Worse case you bring them in to speak with you and do not like any of them so you stay local for another little while.

While this thread is somewhat old, I hope you are still watching and working at is!

I was lucky, I started a local and it affiliated at the end of the school year!

At that point in time, there was a strong push and a almost contest between LXA and TKE to see who who would be the biggest! I figured it was the right time and the right place!
There was alrteady a TKE Chapter which unfortunatly is now long gone, but we were also checked by Theta Chi within a week of when we were checked by TX.

I feel for us it was the best decision and have never looked back!

In todays tuff anti greek World, all of the Internationals have looked very carefully about where they affiliate at becaus of the attitude of the many schools! Well the schools really have NO idea what there is in the Greek World!

What We do and contribuate.

Well, if you are still following this thread, the Best of luck and do not give up hope!

Were were colonized within a short period of time, but it took 3 years to meet the requirements to be chartered! Just to let you know!
