Transfer PNM Questions

Hi everyone!

I have a few questions about going through recruitment as a transfer student. I apologize if any of these questions have already been answered, but I searched pretty hard and didn't find what I was looking for.

1.) I just looked at my transfer credits today, and only 28 transferred over to my university. That makes me a freshman even though I'm a second year. How will this affect recruitment? Will I be rushing as a freshman, a transfer student, or something else? I don't really understand how it will work.

2.) My biggest concern is my GPA. Since I transferred, I'm starting over with no GPA. When I go through recruitment, they'll look at my GPA from my previous university, right? I worked extremely hard to achieve that GPA!!

3.) Lastly, if I wanted to ask someone from my school's Panhel any of these questions, who would I contact?

Thank you in advance!

If the school you're transferring to has a greek life office I'd contact them first as they will probably be your best resource in answering your questions. They are good questions, but without knowing anything about where you'll be attending school it would be a bit of a disservice by trying to give you answers that you're looking for.

Use Google to find an email address or phone number for your school's Panhellenic. There may or may not be anyone on staff during the summer to take your call, but leave a voice mail with a contact number so someone can get back to you. With university orientations going on, I can't imagine you'd have to wait too long for a response.

Which GPA they use will depend on when your recruitment occurs. If it is a summer/fall recruitment, they will most likely use your college GPA from your first school, not your high school GPA. If the recruitment is deferred, meaning after the first semester, they will use your fall GPA at the current school.

You would be rushing as a transfer student and we would count your previous institution's GPA.

If you do well in fall - you may very likely jump to junior status in spring. Some universities bring transfer students or students with lots of community college credit in as freshmen regardless of credit hours so that you can get extra help if you need it or finish taking the entry level classes.

Unless you are at a very competitive recruitment - being a transfer student should not count against you too much.

Be sure to tell your recommendation writers or ladies that you talk to during first round why you transferred, and if you expect you will still be staying 4 years. (If you transferred to change your major - it likely will still take 4 years to graduate.) Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice, everyone! It was certainly helpful. I looked at our greek life website but wasn't sure who to contact - panhel president or vp of recruitment? My school is in northern Ohio and from what I know, recruitment isn't super competitive there and a lot of upperclassmen/transfers go through. I really want to try to get recs, though, but I'm not sure where I would start because no one in my family is Greek and the only Greeks I know are actives! :(

Best bet for a Panhellenic contact in the summer would be someone who works in the office like an advisor or Greek Life Director or other staff personnel.
