Ok, this is my first posting and I am scared no one will respond!!

I am VERY interested in Alumnae Initiation! I have been to college, travelled the world, and done so many things I have set out to do except join a sorority! I feel like I missed out on so much and believe it or not it is one of my only regrets! I never knew alumnae initiation was an option until GC.

So now for the difficult part, I am currently a million miles away from any possible sisterhood because I am living in London. My question is: When I return home and look in to this, if I am invited to join and have to move abroad again (my fiance is English) are there alumni organizations abroad that I could join?

My sister Caroline (UKAXO)is in England at this time and I think they do have panhellenic over there just not separate alumni groups. I think everyone meets together.

I say go for it. There are quit a few people on GC that are doing alumni initiation.

How soon are you planning to return to the US? Have you already decided which group(s) to pursue? If you haven't, you should have no problem doing research on the various sororities from London, because their websites are a great place to start.

I think it's awesome that you want to puruse alumnae initiation!

I guess the big concern here is how you would be able to do so from England. As a couple people pointed out, there *are* alumnae associations in the UK. I would suggest you contact the individual sororities you are interested and asking directly. I do know that a couple sororities have London-based alumae associations (and not just a general Panhellenic group).

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. I am about to apply to attend grad school in the UK (Univ. of Bristol, Univ. of Edinburgh and Univ. of York). I'm wondering what kind of opportunities there might be for me. It seems kinda dumb 'cause I have been trying to affiliate for the longest time now...and if I actually do so this spring, I might just have to leave the country right after! :P (and *that's* why these people shouldn't have taken so long!! :))

And what do you know....the love of my life is also an Englishman! :):) (Sorry Tom!)

At any rate, do what Valkyrie suggests and cruise the websites. If you do a search on this [greekchat] website, there's a thread regarding which of the sororities do alumnae initiation and which don't. That'll help you know where to start. I'd go look, but my computer doesn't like it when I try and flip screens. ;)

I'm an alumna initiate also, and I think it's wonderful you're pursuing alumnae initiation. I see many have already given you some suggestions, and that you already have an idea which organizations you're interested in. Definitely e-mail the director of alumnae relations of each organization, and let them know you're interested in becoming an alumna initiate. Also, have them "introduce" you to the nearest alumnae chapter.

Wish I could remember that bridge I puked my guts out after drinking with a Truck Driver fom England that nite in a town that I can pronounce but can spell! Long as a 25 ft tape measure!

The Welsh never have short names!:D

I would say that your best bet for initiation will be when you are BACK in the USA. However, that doesn't mean that you can't get the ball rolling now. Do you know any Greek women personally who are living in the UK? There is one Greek Chatter, UKAXO that I know of (Caroline is her name). If you can get to know some women who could sponsor you for membership, this will certainly help your case. If not, do not fret. Sometimes sorority women will want to sponsor you once they have had a chance to get to know you personally (you'll have a better opportunity to get to know them in the USA, being that that's where most sorority women are living!)

Do you have an idea of which sorority or sororities you are interested in? To give you an idea, some of us alumnae initiates are from:
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Xi Delta (in the process)
Delta Gamma

To be straight up with you, some Panhellenic organizations are a bit more....err..."progressive" than others when it comes to the concept of Alumnae Initiates. However, I think this trend is changing and if you find that one group is not receptive to your quest...don't worry, another one will be!

You've come to the right place as Greek Chat is a great resource for advice, etc!!

Make sure to check out Tri Sigma, we have a wonderful alumna intiation program. There's a woman on Greekchat going through it right now and my mother was just initiated last year. Tri Sigma is an amazing organization!

Sigma Kappa has an European Alumnae chapter! I know we can't possibly be the only ones. :)

Absolutely! Tri Sigma has many alumnae chapters in Europe as well as a collegiate chapter in Germany! The first one overseas...so exciting :)

Alpha Gamma Delta has alumnae initiates; in fact, my own chapter has several.

Out of curisosity, I did a sister search on the AGD website as to who was in England. Don't remember the exact number but it was bunches, lol! That site isn't open to the public but you can check out AGD at www.alphagammadelta.org:)
