SAE and APO- the linkage.....

Just wanted to let the Sigma Alpha Epsilon brothers know, (who didn't know already), there is a bond between our 2 fraternities, through APO's founder, Frank Reed Horton. Just read this excerpt from The Story Behind the Founding of APO:

"My Brothers in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity house, where I lived, who were outstanding for high ideals and clean living, were all former Scouts. I felt a college organization should be formed that would strengthen men in these ideals, and give them an opportunity for Leadership experience and for Service to others."
-Frank Reed Horton

Intresting, ain't it?

Do you know that we have ties with several other organizations as well.

Omega Phi Alpha

Theta Beta Phi

Groove Phi Groove

Gamma Sigma Sigma

Phi Rho Eta (F R H - Frank Reed Horton)

Jewels

Kappa Alpha Kappa

Yeah, well all except Phi Rho Eta. I never heard of them 'til now. Thanks JayBEE!

No, ECU doesn't have a chapter of Omega Phi Alpha, which is another sister sorority to APO. Omega Phi Alpha is not a big sorority to begin with as they only have 16 active chapters. Ironically, my APO chapter was founded the same year as OPA National Service Sorority was established: 1953.

We had both APO and Omega Phi Alpha on my campus. APO was going strong, but OPA was dwindling off by the time I graduated (they weren't doing too well when I got there in the first place). Do any of you have Omega Phi Alpha on your campus? If so, I hope they are doing well... it sounds like a great group from the little I know!

Don't be a dork. SAE was already established by the time APO was founded and I can guarantee you that the SAEs who helped Frank Reed Horton found APO did NOT tell them any of SAE's secrets. I imagine there may be some similarities and I'm convinced I've figured out what the APO letters stand for as well as some symbolism of their coat of arms (I'm not telling, so don't ask), but I do know that one ritual would not expose another.

I was only joking dude! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

To respond, no, APO and SAE traditions and rituals are not share with each other or any other GLO for that matter. And SAEactive, I don't know if you have correctly figured out APO's symbolisms, but if you have, I suggest you keep them to yourself.

pirate00,

You did read this part of my post, didn't you? What good would it do me to post my personal guesses online? I posted the above quoted statement to emphasize that I wouldn't post what I think I know online. Relax.

Hey, lets not forget the APO/Kappa Delta Rho linkage either.

APO co-founder Everett Probst was founder of the Krescents social fraternity, which was a fraternal eating club. Him and four other APO co-founders were members. In 1928, the Krescents became Rho chapter of Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. What I am unsure about, though, is whether or not the Krescents that graduated (like Probst--c/o '26) were initiated into KDR retroactively, though I would venture to say that they were.

So, the APO founders count is this:

SAE - 8 founders
KDR - 5 founders
Non Greek - 1 founder

Hope this helps

RM

As a brother you should know that the meaning behind our name, crest, symbols, and our induction and initiation rites are things that the fraternity shares only with itself. NEVER reveal the secrets of your GLO, whether it is social, service or professional!

Relax Pirate. My chapter is only a petitioning one. We know no secrets!

Actually Alpha Phi Omega voted to be a non-secret fraternity, when it was established. However, I feel that it's good to keep somethings a secret. Information should be a desire commodity when attempting to obtain membership. But in Alpha Phi Omega there is so much to learn after becoming a member anyway.
