Soul Train Music Awards
Keys Rides "Soul Train"
by Marcus Errico Feb 8, 2002, 12:00 PM PT Alicia Keys' Songs in A Minor continues to be a major force. The R&B newcomer continued her amazing ride, chugging her way to a leading four nominations for the 16th Annual Soul Train Music Awards. Keys, who's up for six Grammys later this month, will compete for Album of the Year, Female R&B/Soul Album, Female R&B/Soul Single ("Fallin' ") and Best New Artist at this year's Soul Train contest. Keys' chief Grammy competition, India.Arie, collected three Soul Train nods: Female R&B/Soul Album (Acoustic Soul), Female R&B/Soul Single ("Video") and Best New Artist. Arie is second to U2 with seven Grammy nominations. The resurgent Isley Brothers also picked up three nominations Thursday night, scoring nods for Group R&B/Soul Album (Eternal), Group R&B/Soul Single and Best Video (both for "Contagious"). Aaliyah, who was killed in an August plane crash, was posthumously recognized in the Album of the Year and Female R&B/Soul Album (for Aaliyah) and Female R&B/Soul Single ("Rock the Boat") categories. Several acts received two nominations: Destiny's Child, Jagged Edge, Jaheim, Jay-Z, Musiq Soulchild and Usher. Founded by Soul Train guru Don Cornelius, the awards honor the best in R&B, rap, soul and gospel (which still doesn't explain how 'N Sync managed a Group R&B/Soul Single nod for "Gone"). Nominations and winners are based on a survey of radio programmers, record retailers and artists. The awards will be handed out March 20 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Here is the complete list of nominees: Album of the Year: Aaliyah, Aaliyah; Pain is Love, Ja Rule; The Blueprint, Jay-Z; Songs in A Minor, Alicia Keys Best New Artist: "Young'n (Holla Back)," Fabolous; "Video," India.Arie; "Fallin'," Alicia Keys; "Ugly," Bubba Sparxxx Female R&B/Soul Album: Aaliyah, Aaliyah; Acoustic Soul, India.Arie; Songs in A Minor, Alicia Keys; Lovers Rock, Sade Male R&B/Soul Album: Invincible, Michael Jackson; Ghetto Love, Jaheim; Aijuswanaseing, Musiq Soulchild; 8701, Usher R&B/Soul Album, Group, Band or Duo: 112, 112; Survivor, Destiny's Child; Eternal, Isley Brothers featuring Ron Isley; Jagged Little Thrill, Jagged Edge Gospel Album: The Experience, Yolanda Adams; Live in Concert, Kim Burrell; Live in London, Donnie McClurkin; Duets, Doug and Melvin Williams Female R&B/Soul Single: "Rock the Boat," Aaliyah; "Video," India.Arie; "Fallin'," Alicia Keys; "Brotha," Angie Stone Male R&B/Soul Single: "Just in Case," Jaheim; "Love of My Life," Brian McKnight; "Love," Musiq Soulchild; "U Got It Bad," Usher. I'm shocked that JILL SCOTT did not receive any nominations for anything. What's up with that?

Thanks ClassyLady, I see what you're saying. But get this, and I know that I'm probably wrong, but I thought that Alicia Keyes', India.Arie, and Jill Scott all had albums that came out around the same time. I don't know. At any rate, I'm looking for Jill's new CD to be up there on the charts (it's great). It's okay if she wasn't nominated for anything this year because she's STILL the bomb to me. :D :D
|
Yeah, you guys are right. Jill's CD came out in 2000. My brother-in-law bought it for me. Believe me Alicia and India are good but Jill is the bomb. I love India Arie but I don't care for Alicia Keyes much...call me weird. When the entire country seems to love an artist I usually shy away and take my own time to "feel" that person.
I am the same way about love interest . ;) |
Jill's CD was released in 2000 but her new CD came out last November.
India's CD came out last March or April. Alicia's CD came out in June 2001. I am coming to the realization that both Jill and Angie are just "too deep" for the awards shows, you know? We love them. Both Jill and Angie have revitalized MUSIC -- their stuff is something I can listen to all day every day. Jill and Angie will probably remain underrated when their music clearly stands iut heads and shoulders above some of the others. Don't get me wrong, I love Alicia and India but Jill's and Angie's CDs just are off the hook in terms of everything. |
Hey EndRoad, I'm also not a big fan of Alicia Keyes' either. I mean, I like a couple of her songs and she seems to be okay, but I just never got into her like I did Jill. And get this, my brother gave me and my husband Alicia's CD for Christmas AND my friend invited me to her concert here in Richmond on tomorrow. :D :D
I still haven't taken the time to listen to the CD in its entirety. I don't know, maybe I'll get something special out of going to the concert. It's just all about Jill Scott for me right now. I'm really into her (and I FIRST heard Jill when she was on the CHRIS ROCK SHOW). When I heard the song that she sang on the show (GETTING IN THE WAY), I HAD to get it. I brought her CD some 3 days after that and just fell in love with EVERY song (I only brought the CD to hear that ONE song). :D :D At any rate, I wish both Alicia and Indie.Arie much luck and success. |
Will India finally get hers?
Remember last year when Jill got snubbed at the Grammy's, she came back to the Soul Train awards and won! Hopefully, India will pick-up something.
:D ;) |
