CRIB system
 

Hi everyone,

I know that a lot of organizations have developed extensive crib systems over the years and my sorority is now looking into this.

I told them that I would help them out (I'm alum)

I just have a few questions:

Would a good way to set it up be to separate everything by department, then by class, then by professor? This seems like the most logical way.

How do you make sure that old tests, quizzes, and papers get put back in the file and someone doesn't walk away with them? I know some fraternities make you xerox so no papers leave that room.

Do you think of a crib system as cheating or as giving you a study boost?

I know I have heard professors make referance to such things and they consider it cheating. But i guess it could depend on how the system gets used.

It would be used as a reference not for cheating.

I see it as more for reference than cheating. You are studying from the old tests/notes. As long as you don't bring these into the testing room with you then IMHO it's not cheating.
I've had several professors make references to it. I just feel as though they are trying to specifically target greeks. I have several friends who are not in greek organizations and have some how gotten ahold of old tests.

Besides, If the profs were't so lazy they could just make up new tests.

I took a class and didn't like the grade that I received so I took it again the next semester. Everything was EXACTLY the same...I guess I don't have to tell you what my new grade was.

As both a professor and a Greek who used the sorority test files way back when, I don't think that using the files was cheating. No one ever gave the same test anyway but it helped me see what kind of tests the professors gave.

When I took calculus, I was lost because I had a Middle Eastern instructor whose accent I couldn't understand even when I went to his office for help. Had we not had a copy of his old tests (from another sorority's file--the class banded together out of desperation), most of us would have failed without a doubt--we had no clue what he was saying.

I went to a small (6,000 students) university and in the School of Business, we had created our own crib system within the accounting majors. As someone stated earlier, no test were the exact same every semester, but using the old test, quizzes, and homework did help us tremendously when preparing class.:D . It gives you an idea of a professor's "testing style" and let's you know what to focus on when studying.

What exactly is a 'crib system' ? What does crib stand for ?

Here at the massively enormous UofT that spans 3 campuses and encompases over 55k students,ASSU posts online old tests and stuff for you to study from and its encourgaed by the admin.

Those profs who don't want their tests out there for others to see shouldn't hand them back out to keep. They should just show you and then collect them again.

I don't see it as cheating, just reference if it's using tests. It's just like taking those practice quizes in the back of some books.

It's just like using old or previous LSATs to study for the current LSAT. And you can buy those.

But if it inolves other assignments that are computergenerated with the formulas being saved and all the new person is doing is entering the new numbers, that is cheating, because they are not creating their own formulas and doing the work. That is the whole point in doing a computer-generated report and then printing two copies, one showing the formulas used.

I am working on a way to actaully do this from our website, as long as the person puts up a file then someone else can download it. I would also like it so people can rate the class and the teacher, so they can decide to take it or not.

I don't see this cheating at all. At my university, old exams and sometimes notes are put online or in the library to check out. I just assumed it was like this everywhere. So when an organization has a test file, its pretty much the same thing all students have access to. The professors are the ones that let us know where to find the old exams. The old exams are extremely helpful in biology and chem. None of the tests I've taken are the same as the old ones either--maybe 2 or 3 questions at the most.

Now the Math center does things differently. Nobody is supposed to keep their old graded tests. If they find out you can get a 0 for cheating. The test reviews are really really similiar to the actual test so if you understand that and do all the problems, then the test shouldn't be too bad. The math system is overall a little weird where I go to school...........

I agree that having old tests and files is reference rather than cheating.

At my school professors will post them online or in the library or even go over them in class as a review before the test. Using old tests is actually recommended by professors. If the new tests are exactly the same or very similar to old tests and people are just memorizing the answers, I think it's the lazy professors fault for not changing the test.
