Lesley Gore passes at 68
Singer Lesley Gore, famous for hits including "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me" has died at 68 in New York of lung cancer. She was SUCH a part of my adolescent music memories--even the thought of her dying so young is sobering.
I did learn that she graduated from Sarah Lawrence with a literature degree, all this done while continuing to write and perform. What a lady! She WILL be missed--😥. |
Rest in peace.
I like her songs. |

We had just seen her on a Batman rerun a couple weeks ago. I was shocked that she was so short! And now I'm shocked to hear of her passing.
She made a lot of people happy in her short life. |
I was reading about the battle over "It's My Party" in terms of who was going to receive credit for releasing the first version. Gore's version was first recognized and it was Quincy Jones' first hit. Cool history lesson. Also good to see Jones' notoriety so early in his career.
Another history lesson is Gore was an LGBT voice, herself being in a relationship with her partner for over 30 years. Awesome. |

She was literally a child...I think 15 or 16 when her first hits occurred. I loved her. It's my party and I'll cry if I want to. Sad.

Since her passing, I have been a YouTubing fool! I have such wonderful high school memories that included the years Lesley had her string of hits.
Several of you have posted about how remarkable her poise and talent were considering her young age. If you want to be amazed, Google: Lesley Gore T.A.M.I Concert. It was a rock concert in CA in the fall of 1964, and featured TOP groups including The Stones, Supremes, Jan and Dean, Little Richard and others including Gore. That teenager MORE than held her own, with 5 songs in the middle of the concert: no synthesizers or voice-overs--just Lesley and her microphone in front of thousands of screaming fans. It's quite remarkable. |
