I got a good one that makes you say hmmmmmmmmmm
Okay driving my happy behind to work in the pouring rain this morning, :DThe deejay plays Al B sure."off on your own girl. Now back in the day, Al B sure is what put, "light skindededededed" :D :D :D guys on the map.*LMAO* As well as Christopher Williams.
I want to know,...... because I wasn't paying attention ha ha ha When did OUR Chocolate, Mahogany Brown Brothers, Make the transition and put themselves on the map and In the spotlight, AND JUST TOOK OVER.? Because I can't think of NOT one Chocolate brother that I can say WAS THE ONE, THAT BROKE THE MOLD. Don't get me wrong, I love all of my AA brothers. It was just a thought that crossed my mind. And yes Al B sure's song, is the song that is gonna be stuck in my head all day. I'm humming the tune now. |
lemme see........
Recently men like Morris Chestnut (myfutchababyfavah) and Taye Diggs.......... Im tryin to think back .................
|
I've always liked my eye candy very tall and on the dark side. :p
I also can't peg when darker men "took over," as it were. But I would say that we've always had well-known male celebs who span the gamut. Namely, I'm thinking of Sidney Poitier (dark) and Harry Belafonte (light).:) |
Wesley did until.....................
I think Wesley Snipes had a lot to do with putting au chocolat brothers on the map too. (UNTIL HE MADE THOSE COMMENTS ABOUT BLACK WOMEN!!)
|
Tyson beckford, hands down.
The Polo ads of him tall, dark and bald put that on the map as THE official trend. |
I'm not bitter........
but back when the light skin brothers were popular so were the light skin girls. And as a chocolate sista... that didn't really get much play... don't even act like you gonna sweat a sista now... cause I REMEMBER!
whoa... flashbacks! Anyways... the light skin folks were always real real conceited. I never had time for that so I was always into the toffee and darker. ;) |

And I would like to point out that light skinned sisters seem to still be in style. Some things don't change. NOT hating, just my observation. |
Dang!! You Took the Words RIGHT...

Let me get back on this one... |
I'm just SO happy that all shades are becoming acceptable. I love seeing chocolate brothers and sisters being portrayed as sexy and attractive in the media, as well as those with light skin and those in between. Beauty comes in every shade.
Now back to the question at hand, it does seem that Tyson "popularized" the dark-skinned, bald look. |
back to the future...........
My own question got me thinkin'
So this is my time span. Work wit me ya'll 1989-1990 Al b sure, Chris williams, kid N play were in effect *the shade is slooowwwwwly changing* 1991-1992 Boys to men, and Morris chest nut Boys in da hood Wesely Snipes (with his pitiful behind) That's why he haven't mad a good movie since that, remark) R kelly pops up and he's kinda brown skin:D *lmao* I luv dat man too bad I ain't fifteen UMmmmm....... hee hee 1992-1993 Shamar moore pops on the scene *keeping, light skin in effect* Will smith was still keeping light skin alive too. Martin Lawrence 1994-1995 Rkelly still in effect,Gerald levert, makes a statement for Big men. LOL, Bobby brown ain't no help 1996 I hear about tyson beckford, and See tyrese's Coke commercial. 1997 blur 98' blur 99' taye diggs, morris chestnut. That's all I can remember. Am I missing something???? |
I don't know how old everyone else is, but I'm in my early thirties and I agree with HoneyKiss, I really think that it was Wesley Snipes that helped jet-start this thing about darker brothers. I'm thinking back to JUNGLE FEVER, NEW JACK CITY----you know, more along that time (some time before Tyson). Maybe I'm wrong. But I REALLY think that Wesley "I NEED A WHITE WOMAN OR AN ORIENTAL WOMAN BECAUSE I'M INTIMIDATED BY A STRONG BLACK WOMAN" Snipes that did it. :D :D :D

Yep...
It was brothas like Wesley Snipes, Blair Underwood , (remember that scene in "Set It Off"?? ) and Denzel Washington that made darker complexioned brothas appreciated again. :p
***Had to edit*** Even Eddie Murphy started looking pretty good when he came out with "Coming to America". Then came Omar Epps, Taye Diggs, ... and what woman did not have that Tyson picture sent to her in an email!! ;) Now there's also brotha Morris. |
Morris Chestnut...YUMMY!!
Omar Epps....YUMMY!! Taye Diggs.....Yummy!! But let us not forget Michael Jordan and Chris Webber.. I think both of them helped the cause! |

It wasn't like I saw Tyson or Wesley on TV and flocked to dark men. It was the fact that lighter men weren’t interested in me but I got love from darker men. So in turn I’ve always been interested in them. In fact, my husband is the lightest man I think I’ve ever dealt with… he’s the toffee (and hates when I say that… LOL) So... IMO, before there was a Blair, Wesley, Morris... dark men already had a fan club. I guess I may have been the only one in it! LOL Not that this needs to be said but I have light skinned friends. LOL I'm sorry that I'm cracking up... but it reminds me of white folks saying.. "i have black friends". And this may be just my thang, but I still don't get down with conceited folks (whatever the shade!) |
