Hello ladies!! I have heard many good things about Greek chat from Adri and Vero. When my lil sis asked me what I thought about tattooing our letters on her back, I really didn't know what to tell her. I know of two sisters who have this, but wanted other Phi's opinion on the subject. Is it wrong? cool? what?? I have really thought of doing it myself, and know that my big has thought of it? Does anybody else have them tattooed somewhere? I really wanted to get a Bear with the letters in his tummy on my hip. What do you think? :rolleyes:

Hi Maria! My big is on Greek Chat now! :D Glad to know you are on GC! As far as tattoos go, you know how I feel about that. I am all about it.

I asked about it on GC from all of the members, and the majority of the people said for women that if you do get a tattoo of your letters, it should be hidden. There was some negativity about it, but as long as it is hidden, I think it is fine. :D

I want to get the tattoo my big has. The tattoo you are thinking of is really cute! :D

My only advice would be: Be sure you really want a tattoo before you do it. I was in school in the early '90s and a ton of my friends got tats. Now, ten years later, many are wishing they didn't.

I know I sound motherly, just be sure it is something that you want with you for a long, long time to come. Also, if you do decide to get one, really check the cleanliness of the artist and his/her studio. If you feel--even remotely--that it might not be clean and sterile, find another place. You cannot be too careful these days.

But, if, after considering all these things, if you still want to do it, I see no reason not to go for it. I do agree, as mentioned above, that putting it in a discreet location would be a good idea. Many people have negative opinions of people with tats, esp. women. Just something else to think about. :)

three members of my chapter had their letters tatooed and then they turned psycho and we had to kick them out, not that you will, but its a bad aura.

be very sure that you want this thing on your body forever. what you want now you may not want in 20 years.

i have an alpha phi tattoo, which i got in philly when i was at st. joe's there in 1992. it's on my left pelvic bone and is an ivy leaf, like the 'pledge' pin and has the letters underneath. it's about 1 1/2 inches long. i wish i had not gotten the letters. because of them i have to make unnecessary explanations about something that is personal to me and sometimes seen as frivolous or silly to others who just don't understand what alpha phi meant and means to me. without the letters i could just say that i think ivy is very beautiful and keep the other, special meaning to myself. after 10 years i feel the same way about the fraternity, but not the tattoo.

another thing is to think about where on your body you want this. what kind of job are you looking to do out of college? will you need to wear stockings? do you want a big tattoo on your ankle to be seen through them at a job interview? what kind of wedding dress do you want? off the shoulder with a tattoo staring back at the congregation while you're at the altar (or wherever you may be)? this is important stuff. don't let the zeal of the moment make you do something you may regret in the future. think long and hard and then enjoy the choice you've made.

auntieaub brings up a lot of good points and questions. i have had two tattoos for about 7 years and wish i had never gotten them. although they're not outrageous and can be hidden, i'm looking into having them removed. however, the cost is more than i can afford right now. no one knows what will interest you 5, 10 or 15 years from now, but if you decide on the tattoo, i'd make sure it isn't easily viewable.

I have thought a lot about getting an Alpha Phi related tattoo, but I'm still undecided. My roommate recently got one that is really pretty. It's on her left pelvic bone and it's an ivy vine about two inches long. It kind of curls at the end, and in the curl, she has "aoe" in lowercase letters about 1/4 of an inch tall. It's all in black ink and really nice. It's low enough so that it's hidden when she wears jeans unless they're the low-rise style.

I'm considering it, but I don't know if I want another one. (I have a chinese dragon on my lower back because I was born in the year of the dragon.) My advice to everyone is to just think it through.

I am still debating on what tattoo to get. I know that I want one, I just have not decided on what to get. I was thinking of the letters A Phi written out in ivy vines, but I am not too sure. Maybe the big dipper. Ah, I am confused!

I already have a butterfly tattoo on my mid-lower back, so I was thinking of something small that I could get somewhere else on me. I think I've decided on an ivy leaf. I would get it on my foot, half way between my ankle and pinky toe, sort of where the Dixie Chicks have their tattoos. This wouldn't be a problem while in professional dress, I don't think, because I'd never be wearing shoes that showed that part of my foot.

What do you all think?

BTW, my little sis and I will be getting the same tattoo and since my big sis already has an A-Phi tattoo, she won't be getting any other tattoos. I don't know if my little will get the ivy leaf in the same place, but probably not.

May I add one more to the list? From what I've been told, a tattoo on your stomach + pregnancy = an ugly blob afterward.

I have heard, and I don't know if this is true, but I have heard that the friction generated by your foot rubbing against your shoe can actually cause a tattoo to "run." My hubby is a doctor. I will ask him when he gets off work tomorrow if this is actually a concern and let you know. :)

I asked my hubby about the tattoos. He said you should be very careful getting a tattoo anywhere that significant friction could be generated. He said it *is* posssible for the fiction of your shoes to cause the tattoo to become distorted or the ink to spread. Not the precise terminology he used, but you get the jist.

As others have pointed out, too, he said to be careful in selecting the location. Stomachs, breasts, and any other place where significant fat can be lost or gained, are bad places for tattoos, he says. The losing and gaining of weight can cause the tattoo to become distorted.

Finally, he wanted me to be sure to remind you to carefully inspect the tattoo parlor that you choose. Look closely at their sterilization methods. Ask questions. Find out how they sterilize their instruments. If in doubt, walk out. Better to be safe than sorry.

Earlier today my biological sister mentioned to me that getting a tattoo on my foot could cause the tattoo to become distorted because of the friction from shoes. I didn't believe her, but now I do. ;) Thanks so much!
