New ZTA colony
 

My school (KU) is going to have a new ZTA colony sometime soon. Would they let me join even though I'm an upperclassman? I don't have much time left in college, but I would love to be part of an alumnae chapter later on, and there's one in my area.

And how does one go about rushing a colony? Is it the same as normal rush? What do you have to do when you're starting a new chapter?

Any help y'all can provide would be much appreciated.

Most colonies that are organized from scratch (so to speak) want to have a variety of women from different classes to round out the colony. Look at it this way... if you take a whole colony of freshmen than in 4 years (or so) you'll lose a very large piece of the chapter. If you have spread of classes than you lose the colony members a little at a time. So, yes, I would think that a new colony would certainly be looking for upperclassmen. In fact, I would think that these would be the colony members first looked at for leadership positions.

As for rushing the colony. I would suggest that you contact the greek life office at the university. They should be able to give you information about when and where. If nothing else, they'll take your name and contact information.

Good luck ... being part of a colony may be hard work but the sisterhood is certainly worth it.

You should definitely contact KU Greek Life and put your name in as being interested in ZTA colonization. Historically colonies are made up of a diverse number of women from all classes. Your maturity and experience would be a definite plus!

A colonization team will visit campus and hold special information sessions/interviews. From there, select women will be invited back for other events, similar to formal recruitment. A traveling leadership consultant or graduate consultant will stay behind to work with the new chapter to teach you about ZTA history, etc. as well as national policies, etc. You will elect an Exec. Council and Programming Council and develope your own local programs. You will be expected to reach certain goals and once those goals are attained, you will be initiated into the Fraternity and your colony will be installed as an official chapter. In addition, your colony will send a representative to Convention (this year in Tampa) where you will meet 100's of ZTA sisters and learn more about our great Fraternity.

In the meantime, try and find out if any of your family members or their friends are Zetas. If so, ask them to send a letter of reference for you.

Is a reference letter that big of a deal? I don't think anyone in my family knows a Zeta. If I join, I'd be the first person in my family to go Greek.

Many colonies like having upperclassman because they need older women to run the chapters. They need women who already have campus involvement.

Hi all,

I found out more about the KU colonization today. If any of you know someone who goes to KU (or plans to go there next year) and would like to be a Zeta, please pass this along.

Zeta reps will be on campus in April for informational meetings, and they will have more interests sessions during formal recruitment this fall. (I don't think they are actually going to participate in recruitment, though.) There are at least 3 Zeta chapters in this area and an alumnae chapter, so I believe this colony will have a bright future.

Well, it is now April and the ZTA colony at KU will soon be getting off the ground.

Unfortunately, colonization will have to happen without me.

I will have to leave school next semester for financial reasons. Needless to say, joining a sorority is out of the question.

I wish ZTA the best of luck with its new chapter.

Hey, We just got chartered and we were aclolony. It is alot of hard work, but it is all worth it, I am from Kappa Rho in Spartanburg, SC...Good Luck, let us know if you need any help:p
