IU recruitment question
I am a sophomore transfer student with a 3.9 GPA. I am worried about the ranking system since it is common knowledge that some IU chapters do not take sophomores and yet I can't find out which chapters those are. Clearly it would be helpful to know when I am ranking them. I would hate to choose chapters that would in no way take me over chapters that would at least consider a sophomore. Can anybody give me info on any you are aware of that definitely do or don't? Also, are those cuts at least made right away? Thanks, I appreciate any information you can give me!

Hi hoosiersoph. There is no hard and fast rule about sophomores at IU and it varies from year to year. For example, if ABC took quite a few sophomores the year before, then the following year they may not take as many or any. However, DEF and GHI might not have taken many in previous years and may take more this year. To generalize, the chapters taking smaller pledge classes will, in all honesty, take fewer sophomores because they will most likely want freshman. Your GPA will help you out with some chapters.

Examples: XYZ might have taken some last year, but find themselves "upperclassman heavy" this year. So they might not be looking to take as many. ABC might only be taking like 35 girls total this year. They are not going to take a ton of freshmen because they are limited in openings to begin with and want women who will be part of the chapter for 4 years. DEF might have leeway to take a larger class due to graduation and such, so they may take a handful. You never know. I would like to think that you'd be released earlier rather than later from any chapter who is for sure not interested in sophomores. However, we can't say that for sure. Good luck to you! |
Your GPA will definitely help keep chapters that would cut sophs with a 3.2-3.5. That said, it's really going to depend. Some chapters rarely ever take sophomores that they are not otherwise familiar with (I.e. are friends with members). Go into recruitment with a VERY open mind and be ok with accepting a bid to any chapter, regardless of tier.
ETA: I rushed as a sophomore in the stone ages (within the last 8 years)...don't take any of the cuts personally. I cried after getting my list after round 1 before I realized it's just how the numbers work. Good luck! |
