Promise book
I saw that this girl has her Promise book for sale on eBay. From what I can gather it's actually HERS -- she's selling lots of letter shirts and stickers and things, and the way she describes them it appears that they have all been owned by her at some point or another. I don't know if she just graduated or what, though she says the Promise book is new and never written in. She also advertises it as containing "everything about Sigma Kappa!".
I know that our Promise book doesn't contain anything secret -- but it is (or at least should be, in my opinion) still a cherished guide and keepsake for the new member, the active member, and the alumna. I'm going alum in April, but I would NEVER think to sell my Promise book -- even if I had never written in it! I treasure it. In my mind, this is just as bad as selling our badges on eBay. Buying these things outside of being a part of the sisterhood is not only disrespectful, in my opinion, but harmful as well. It makes me SO angry to see our badges for sale on eBay, and when I saw the Promise book this morning I was absolutely incensed. I started to fire off an e-mail to her DEMANDING that she cancel the auction (remembering the sequence of e-mails in the current Triangle between Angela Guillory and an eBay seller), but thought better of it and went to class instead. If this girl is a member of the Sorority, why on earth would she have such disregard for Sigma Kappa as to sell her Promise book? I don't know her membership status for certain or if she's even affilitated with the sorority -- that's just my inference given what she says in her auction listings. Either way, I think she should cancel the auction; I don't think the Promise book should be sold under any circumstances. Am I totally out of my mind, or does anyone else see something wrong with this? I guess the primary thing I'm feeling is insult, and even more so if she's a sister... if she's ignorant of Greek life altogether and is just selling stuff she found, that's one thing, but if she has a connection to the sorority (and if she's a MEMBER!), I'm insulted that she would have such lack of emotion toward the Sorority that she would sell her own Promise book. You know? Anyway, I was really pissed off and had to vent. It's just that she seems to imply that she's been affiliated with SK in some way or another, and with a collection of letter shirts as big as what she's selling, I'm guessing she was around for a while. It takes a while to accumulate so many shirts! :) And while I'm talking, we Sigma Kappas need to get out here and represent! :) We don't make enough use of our own board. I'd love to hear from all my sisters out there and know what you're up to! That was why I joined GC in the first place!!! :) In Sigma -- Lauren PS -- The item # for the Promise book is 1070978029. |
E-Bay
I went and checked it out and was rather distressed about it. I know what the book has in it, since I went through the Promise program. It's just one of those things that shouldn't be sold. It's not like a tee-shirt or party favor. I can't imagine what other greek organizations would say about their own new member handbooks being sold. Well, I have my fingers crossed that no one bids on it or she removes it.........:(

I saw the book on there yesterday and I got really angry too! I also went through thte Promise program, and I still use my book as a reference (very handy when those discussions about other GLO's pins come up, I think :) )
I am sure the HQ is looking at all the aby auctions, but I almost emailed her demanding the same thing, and like you, I remembered the latest Triangle issue. I just hate sitting back and not being able to do anything, but on the other hand, I don't want to do something that might be construed the wrong way. But here's the thing.. on the desc for the auction she says that she will only sell to another Sigma Kappa.. how can she be sure????? I mean, if you are going to do that, why not just donate it back to your chapter, or send it to HQ or SOMETHING other than selling it on ebay!! Melissa Alpha Gamma -a very upset alum!- |
Ok, I thought that I was the only one who recognized "tyoregon"... I'm so glad you did too! everytime I see a badge, I swear that they have a bid on it.. and I've been looking, and there are so many more badges and other GLO stuff on ebay than before... I hate this, and I feel like one lil person... I wish ebay had a policy on it, but they can't since it's all auction and it's hard to tell someone "yeah, actually it's our property and you have to return it" They just wouldn't understand!

I am so proud of your restraint!! I would have had half a mind to talk his ear off about what this stuff really means to us!! You handles that very civilly, I think. :D

Promise Book situation
As the Assistant New Member Educator for my chapter it really upsets me that someone is selling their Promise Book. When our new members come in we make it very clear to them that the copy of the book is not be shared with any non-Sigma Kappas and is to be kept forever and ever till they die. Obviously this girl is either and alum or a member because if she had withdrawn or was expelled ALL her Sigma Kappa stuff would have been returned to her home chapter. What you need to do, if you haven't done it already, is notify nationals of the situation. They will take care of it from there. You might try to find out what chapter she is from and email the president and she if she can reign in the situation. Good luck and don't be afraid to tell her off if you get the book. I know I would. Good luck and I hope everythign works out!
