Deffered recruitment?
Ever since I decided that I wanted to go through recruitment and have been browsing on GreekChat I realized that members of the sororities have a whole semester to observe you. It makes me really think about the things I do before I do them.
Ex: Parties. I've been to a few fraternity parties with friends this semester but I always offer to be the "sober/responsible" friend because I don't want to give a bad impression… someone could really remember you as "that sloppy drunk girl who made out with like 3 brothers at the XYZ party" (exaggeration here) Ex: Dressing well. As much as I just want to roll out of bed an throw a hoodie and sweats on I also don't want to look like a slob every day. People might start to notice me as the girl who looks like she may or may not have showered. Also, I've really been trying to make it to a lot of the sororities philanthropy events that I see advertised around campus and on top of that their fall/winter open houses. Is this my OCD operating here? Or do members actually notice this stuff? Thanks in advance for any insight! :) |

Of course they notice... and remember

Yup. There is only a once chance for a first impression. Or you know we might be in your class or your RA, or friends with your RA. There are many ways of seeing PNMs before recruitment begins especially with deferred recruitment. My RA wasn't greek, but a good friend of hers was. The girl in my dorm (not my floor even) who very quickly got the reputation for being sloppy and drunk didn't get a bid when she went through deferred recruitment. I can't say it was due to my RA's friend, but I distinctly remember a time where said girl threw up in the hallway and the RA's friend came around and said "Ugh what is that smell?" RA said "yeah there was a girl who had a rough night." Friend "Is it the one you told me about?"
Also, OCD is a compulsive disorder. Heavy emphasis on disorder. Although it is used incredibly frequently regarding things that aren't serious, it is a serious disorder. While you might be spending a lot of time focusing on something, it is not all encompassing and life consuming like OCD can be. Please don't make light out of it. /Off the soapbox. |

The habits you're setting up are going to serve you well in life, not just in order to have a successful recruitment.
I was never a fan of pajamas to class. You can look neat and presentable without spending hours getting ready. And it's just a good idea for your health and safety to not get sloppy drunk. Not to split hairs, but if you're a freshman, you're probably not 21 and a legal age to drink anyway. I'm sure nobody here drank underage (ahaahahahah). Don't let a bad hair day keep you from going to class, but sure, why not put your best foot forward? |

Its ok to be casual to go to class. Unless you're attending a school with a bunch of fashion design majors, and they are sorority members then perhaps I would dress it up a little. But if that's not the culture of campus, then throwing your hair up in a bun, and wearing sweatshirts and jeans to class would be acceptable. I won't advocate going to class in your pajama bottoms. Nor do I advocate anyone going out in their PJ's if they are over the age of 6. The only acception to this is if you're going through a drive-thru then maybe...;) Good luck to you when recruitment season comes around and let us know how things turn out. |
I have deferred too! Good idea on looking presentable to go to class, better to be known as cute than as pj girl!!
