Michigan and Brady Hoke

Has anyone been following the story on him this week? Michigan has been losing so he's on his way out. But Saturday he let his QB keep playing despite a head injury.

Since then there has been tons criticism on this including a rally against the athletic director.

I think he should be fired, I'll be surprised if he's still coaching Saturday.

as the last guy to defend a Michigan man...

I haven't read all the coverage but has it been determined that Hoke knew the kid was concussed, or for that matter had re-taken the field?

Football sidelines are chaotic spaces -- head coach, offensive/defensive coordinators (in the booth), position coaches, players -- all in real-time, pressure-filled back-and-forth conversations in the headsets during the game.

Medical personnel rule, as they should. Had the medical declaration been conveyed up the coaching chain of command? At the very least, the player's helmet should have been taken away, preventing him from re-entering the game.

Not placing blame because I don't know what happened. Ultimately, it's on Hoke, but a lot of things could have taken place.

2 Michigan alums that will get looked at for the Michigan head coaching position:
Jim Harbaugh (former Stanford HC, current SF 49ers HC)
Les Miles (former Oklahoma State HC, current LSU HC) & his wife was a Central Michigan varsity BB player & was an Asst. Coach for the Michigan's women's BB team

Have you seen the video?

It's entirely possible that Hoke didn't see what happened, but I would be really surprised if that was the case. The QB was hit HARD, he was shaken up, he was wobbling while he walked, and he had to lean on a teammate while heading toward the sideline. How does a head coach miss that?

If I saw that and I was Hoke, I wouldn't care what anyone else thought, I'd try to take the QB off the field and out of the game.

No, I didn't see the video (or the game), and the QB is a premiere position so it's possible he did. But there are other scenarios.

Again, not a UM guy (so I don't know Hoke's game day proclivities) but some Head coaches go to the bench (if only for a play or two) to talk to the unit that's just come off the field. Could the QB hit have occured when Hoke was talking to bench players? I don't know, but that's my point about the chaos inherent on sidelines that TV cameras seldom, if ever, pick up.

I'd want to know when the medical people made the declaration the kid was out, who (what coach) they told the kid could not return, and go from there.

Clearly, at the very least, an assistant may have let the coach down, not informing Hoke if Hoke didn't see the hit/resulting wobbliness for himself.

The Michigan football cult is alive and well.

The ONLY thing Michigan fans care about is winning. They don't care about the concussion just like they did not care when their punter raped a girl and Tyler Lewan threatened to rape her again for when she went public.

The FACT is Michigan fans were crying about Brady Hoke long before the concussion because the team is struggling. Go to the rivals message board or the scout.com message board and you will see tons of threads about getting rid of Hoke that were started BEFORE the concussion.

Good job Michigan Men.

How did the teammate who was holding him up miss it? Good job Michigan Men.

PS. The fact is Michigan fans were crying about Hoke long before the hit because all the Michigan cult cares about is winning games.

The problem is, as far as I can tell, Hoke hasn't denied seeing what happened, and he's defended himself by asserting that if the QB didn't feel up for playing, he would have taken himself out of the game. That's laughable with all we've learned about concussions and players not wanting to leave a game, despite what their body is telling them.

Ok, if that's how the scenario played out, that changes things.

Les Miles' name gets bandied about every time UM needs a coach, and twice he has turned them down. I see no reason why this would be different this time.

There is a little more to the scenario.

1. The UM cult has been crying about Hoke for several YEARS. They only care about winning. Concussions and graduation rates are not their concern.

2. The BObots(Bo Schembechler cultists) have been talking about getting Harbaugh or Miles for years.

3. Notre Dame kicked the chocolate out of UM this season.

4. This incident is just an excuse to complain about Hoke.

Nanners52674 10-01-2014 04:00 PM

I'm honestly appalled with Michigan fans, it's one of the first big football schools where I've seen fans just not show up. Even during the "dark years" at Notre Dame the fans still showed up to support the players.

I'm a bit shocked they haven't fired him yet given all the publicity. But I guess they'll wait until the end of the season.

TonyB06 10-01-2014 04:23 PM

As an loyal OSU Buckeye fan (except for a narrow 2-year window in the 70's when a cousin was UM's starting fullback), you hate to see the program go through a situation like this.

First, I hope the player is alright and that things work out for everyone involved.

And most assuredly, that the BUCKEYES continue their dominance of the "dazed and through." :)

Brady Hoke doesn't wear a headset, and the offensive coordinator is on the sidelines, not in the booth, so the potential has always been there for a communication gap. He has said that he was looking elsewhere on the field, didn't see Morris, and didn't know. My husband and I were watching and we were shocked that Morris was sent back in, but we could understand how it happened, and I believe Brady Hoke. It looks like some changes are in the works to make sure it doesn't happen again - there will be a medical team member in the booth from now on.

As far as firing Brady Hoke...the team is behind him, and there seems to be more animosity toward the athletic director, Dave Brandon. I don't have a lot of hope that another change will fix things quickly. Desmond Howard was at practice the week before the game and said that he didn't see any players who demonstrated intensity. Also, UM has a new president this fall and I think it would be very difficult for someone new to the job to fire the AD, the football coach, etc. when he's still getting his feet wet.

Everyone is talking about the Michigan team but as an 3rd generation alumna of the University of Minnesota, I am thoroughly appalled at the hit that our lineman made on Shane Morris. It was a bad hit and knowing Jerry Kill that player, Theiran Cockran got chewed a new one. I watched the game with my father and we just sat there with our mouths on the floor.

To all Michigan alums, we also apologize to you for the unsportsmanlike conduct of Cockran. I just hope that Shane recovers fully from his injuries and that both the Michigan and Minnesota coaches and physicians learn from this incident.
