The Disappearance of Hannah Graham
A suspect has been arrested and is in custody: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/0...n_5878636.html
I know TFM/TSM isn't a favorite site among us Greeks, but this article was on point. As a current college student at a large university, I can testify that the things said in this article are true. What happened to Hannah could happen to anyone and we could all be more careful. http://totalsororitymove.com/missing...yone-even-you/ I hope and pray that Hannah is found safe and that if foul play was involved (which it seems to have been), justice is served. :( |
I dislike articles like this because I think they rob women of agency and teach us to live in fear. What are they really telling women to do differently? I'm not opposed to using common sense, and I think every young woman should read The Gift of Fear, but let's not reduce every young woman into a potential victim.
Also, do we really know yet what happened to Graham? Maybe I'm behind on the story, but how do we know Hannah Graham didn't up go on some crazy vacation? |

I don't want this to come off as victim-blaming in any way - what happened to her is not her fault at all. It's just an unfortunate reminder that a decision that many college students make throughout their college career (getting drunk and going off by yourself to walk home, go to another party, etc.) can result in such unfortunate consequences. :( Here's a good article that gives a timeline of events: http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/23/us/vir...now/index.html. |

Starsky knows that.

She's the third young lady to disappear from the area since 2009. Morgan Harrington was eventually found murdered after disappearing in 2009. Alexis Murphy, a high school student, still has not been found (although a suspect is in custody). And now Hannah. I absolutely loved living in Charlottesville and felt safe, but there's definitely something going on in the area. I'm currently an hour away and I'm seeing a huge increase in security on the local campuses.
I'm interested to hear what Jesse Matthew says about the situation (and, more importantly, what the forensic evidence says). There's a lot of speculation in the public about linking the Alexis Murphy case with this one (the man in custody in Alexis's case mentioned a man with dreadlocks) but the police have issued a statement saying that the cases are not linked at this time. I hope this brings awareness to people about going places alone. I'm always stressing to the ladies I advise that they shouldn't walk alone at night, regardless of where they were or what they were doing. I'm sick of the speculation that I see on our local news commentary about what Hannah was wearing or what she was doing. While the alcohol may have impaired her judgment, no one had the right to take advantage of her. I'm hopeful that they will find her alive, but each day it's becoming more and more likely that she is no longer with us. |

My apologies if my second post came off as victim-blaming in any way, as that was not my intent at all. What happened was not her fault whatsoever, and nobody had any right to harm her in any way. Nobody deserves to be taken advantage of. I was just trying to say what I have learned from personal experience: that you can say "oh, I'll never walk home alone in the middle of the night" but when you're drunk and you just want to get home, you might think differently since your judgment is impaired. And, cases like this are a reminder that those decisions you might make when you're drunk can have terrible consequences :(. |

Men are rarely told to be cautious of walking alone at night or during the day in potentially dangerous environments. Despite the fact that men have a higher rate of victimization for all violent crimes except for rape and sexual assault. Despite what heteromachismo conveys, the average man is unable to fight off an attacker with or without a weapon. I want everyone to be safe, not just women who are constantly preached to about personal safety. |
