Urban Outfitters Offends Kent State

Urban Outfitters strikes again. I think someone needed to look up May 4th, 1970, before they posted this shirt. If you have social media, students, alum and others are posting the hashtags: #WeAreKentState #BoycottUrbanOutfitters.

I like to think Urban Outfitters is making progress when they can be as offensive to white people as they are to people of color (most notably Native Americans).

They are attention whores and publicity junkies.

I agree that this a publicity stunt. I would bet $$ that UO does not have thousands of these that will be trashed but maybe a couple dozen well placed prototypes that will garner lots of media attention.

So sad, but so true.

Well in this instance they offended all of us as a KSU community quite successfully. Even after all these years May 4th is still a big deal up here. And they (UO) certainly are attention whores!

I was only 3 years old in 1970 when this happened but after listening to the statements of the "citizens on the street" and statements (at the time) of students' family members regarding the protesters in this video, wow, it is really hard to swallow that other US citizens were endorsing the shooting of other US citizens, just like the trolls on Twitter were/are doing regarding certain events.

I love researching the culture/era of the 60s/70s, and the tragic events just a few days later at Jackson State along with the events at Kent State, really put a strong sociological perspective on how attitudes were back then. A fascinating turbulent era.

They have one. Literally, just one that they purchased from a flea market. They have a "vintage finds" collection where they pick up old pieces that they think look cool and sell them for way more money than they're worth, because hey, UO.

UO is not a company I'm fond of, but I suspect it honestly didn't occur to them. Who knows.

Nothing but a sick publicity stunt. Their "apology" is an even bigger slap in the face.

"We deeply regret that this item was perceived negatively.”

They don't apologize for the item being in incredibly poor taste or hurtful, just that the PUBLIC misinterpreted it. This is NO apology.

Urban Outfitters sick & twisted sweatshirt

This is in very poor taste.

I like UO's interior products and I generally buy books/gifts and accessories there but I've never bought their clothing.

I don't think I'll be going there for a while.
Disgusting.
