Non-secret fraternities/sororities
 

Do they exist? If they do, what are some?

Delta Upsilon is a non-secret fraternity...I think there are some brothers who visit here occasionally who can give us more info.

Yes, there are a few non-secret fraternities, but none are as big as Delta Upsilon, which is the largest and oldest non-secret fraternity.

We were founded at Williams College in 1834 -- we are the sixth oldest fraternity in North America. From The Cornerstone (our manual), "DU had no need for mystic principles shrouded in secret ritual. Our aims were open, honest and direct."

Personally, I feel that being in a non-secret fraternity has its advantages. Not only do we get to experience and live a life like every other fraternity, but we also get a chance to show everyone else what we are about. Our initiation is open to public scrutiny. We invite parents, friends, and university administration, so not only do we have great brotherhood, but others like faculty know that we do not have anything to hide and that allows us to sometimes have a higher level of respect with them.

I'm not saying that a non-secret fraternity is better than any other, don't get me wrong. It is just different, that's all. But I see no disadvantages, but sure, I'm obviously biased http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I am very impressed! I don't agree with that secrecy thing that much either. To bad you guys are the only well known non-secret GLO, I hope this will become more of a trend some day in the future. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for the links! I love hearing about different traditions chapters have. Your Puddle Pull is a lot more complicated than it looks in the photos.

we are VERY intense! Since Puddle Pull is ours, we take a lot of pride in it because everyone wants to win it. It is probably one of the most popular greek events, and is a big tradition at Miami University. Ask any greek and they will know what it is. So yes, we take it very seriously and practice for about 3 weeks before the actual event. It's a good time, something I'll always remember.

To my knowledge there is only one more national non-secret fraternity. I don't remember the name, but I know it was one of the first fraternities founded in California (as opposed to the East Coast).

But to add a personal note, one of the reasons I decided to pledge DU was of the non-secrecy. I liked the idea that we don't have to hide everything we do and that we can invite friends and family to our initiations. Very cool.

I heard about the Puddle Pull, and I'm pretty sure almost every DU chapter has a big event that's "ours". For instance Houston's Push Ball is one I can think of.

It looks like they were doing their event with the sisters of Gamma Phi Beta if I read the shirts correctly...

I find this very fascinating and admirable indeed. Very tasteful. Just because it is non secretive doesn't in any way denote a lack of pride and respect for the ritual. Bravo to Delta Upsilon!

Is DU co-ed? I saw a picture on one of the websites with girls in it.
