Iowa State U: The End of VEISHEA

Alcohol, injuries, property damage, and on and on over the years . . . .

I guess we'll see if anything similar will replace it.

I'm disappointed, but not surprised. There have been whispers that the president and vp student affairs had been wanting to be rid of it for a while and the task force was just a screen to do so. I will miss being able to take my kids to the parade and walk around campus afterwards seeing the group displays and events. I don't care for it to be replaced by a similar event connected with Homecoming, either.

I doubt anything will happen in the next year, even unofficially. The real ones affected are the student clubs and groups who relied on VEISHEA to fundraise and support their club for the year. They've basically lost their main income source.

Arkansas used to have something just like this called GAEBALE. (GAY-ba-leigh) It got out of hand and although I remember it from my childhood, it was gone by the seventies.

Me too - but I understand the decision. It's too bad that a handful of bad apples made incredibly bad decisions over the years - I will miss the parades, the little cherry pies - the lawn chair brigade, and bunches of other things. Hopefully they'll show up in another venue - and I agree that it's sad an opportunity to really showcase the best of the school and allow clubs to raise funds was lost.

My mother in law used to be in charge of making all the cherry pies! I'm not sure whether or not to tell her it's all over.
