Chapter's name
How do you guys name all the chapters?
I know most of fraternities/sororities name their chapters by Alpha to Omega (some), and then go to Alpha-Alpha, Alpha Beta, etc ... Or by states (Iowa-Gamma, Ohio-Zeta) We (Theta Delta Chi) named ours totally different. We're going from Alpha to Psi (we have no Omega, as it refers to something else). Only one charge has Alpha letter, honoring the Mother Charge. Then we go to Deuteron (second degree of Greek Alphabet - Beta Deuteron, Delta Deuteron, etc) and after Psi Deuteron, we go to third degree - Triton (Beta Triton, Gamma Triton, etc). Then proteron. *sigh* too many Greek grammar here  |
I know there was a thread about this recently... do a search.
At any rate, AEPhi names our chapters as follows: Alpha through Omega Alpha Alpha through Alpha Omega Epsilon Alpha through Epsilon Omega Phi Alpha through Phi Omega Beta Alpha through... so far, Beta Epsilon :) |
We name chapters just like AEPhi, only with our letters...so it's:
Alpha through Omega Delta Alpha through Delta Omega Phi Alpha through Phi Omega Epsilon Alpha through Epsilon Omega and then we go to Alpha Alpha and so on... We're up to Gamma Alpha, but Gamma Beta and Gamma Gamma are soon to come!! |
AOII does something completely different than what has been mentioned so far! The chapters are allowed to pick their own name. As a colony that is one of the requirements is to chose a chapter name. Sometimes they are named for someone who helped them found the colony/chapter, sometimes for the initials of the submotto, sometimes after the school, it all depends. I actually like this idea because it allows for the chapter name to be special as well--but it does make it difficult to put the chapters in order of installation (like Omicron Pi chapter was founded before Beta Gamma)

Theta Iota is my chapters name. Just for some info.

This is how we do it...
I remember this topic being discussed in the AGD forum, and greeklawgirl cracked the code! This is how AGD names our chapters:
There were five original provinces, and they were named as follows: Alpha: NorthEast Beta: Upper Midwest Gamma: Southeast Delta: West Epsilon: Lower Midwest Alpha went through the entire alphabet with Alpha Omega chartering in 1971. The Northeast chapters then jumped to Zeta, which is the 6th letter of the alphabet. They're named in groups of five.. so, in keeping with the pattern, this is how future chapters will be named: The Northeast Province went from Alpha to Zeta. Once we charter Zeta Omega, the northeast chapters will go to Lambda. When they charter Lambda Omega, NE will go to Pi. From Pi it will go to Phi. Upper Midwest Provence is still on Beta Tau. Once we charter Beta Omega the Upper Midwest will go to Eta, then Mu, then Rho, then Chi. The Southeast Province went through Gamma, then it jumped to Theta. Once Theta Omega is chartered, SE chapters will jump to Nu, then Sigma, then Psi. West Province has only gone to Delta Sigma (which happens to be my chapter!), but once it charters Delta Omega, Western Chapters will go to Iota, then Xi, then Tau, then Omega. Lower MidWest Province finished Epsilon, then moved to Kappa. After Kappa is finished, it would go to Omicron, and then Upsilon. ***I think Maria deserves another round of applause!*** |
AGD's naming is so complex :p lol

To show respect for the educational institution that a DU chapter was established at, we name our chapters after the school. We are the Miami Chapter. Our "alpha chapter" was the Williams Chapter, and so on....

Wow! I didn't realize things were so different from GLO to GLO! We do it this way:
Alpha to Omega (I believe, anyway, I'm not looking at our book right now so I'm not positive we end with Omega) Alpha Alpha to Alpha Omega Beta Alpha to Beta Omega Gamma Alpha to Gamma Omega Delta Alpha to Delta Omega Epsilon Alpha to Epsilon Omega Zeta Alpha ------> you get the idea. I think some people use Omega to signify when members die, but we call this Chapter Eternal. I like the way we do it because it helps you know how old a chapter is. For instance, if they have a single letter name, they are very old chapters from the fraternity's beginnings. When a chapter name is Zeta, etc., you know that the chapter is relatively new, like from the 90's. My boyfriend is a Sig Ep, and I think they do it this way (correct me if I'm wrong, all you Sig Eps out there): They do it by state. The first chapter in a state gets Alpha. For example, Texas Alpha. The next chapter in that state gets Texas Beta. This goes on in every state, and I think there are not enough chapters in any of the states to warrant the use of two greek letters, but I could be wrong about that too. |
